Job Summary The Indigenous Internship Program (IIP) offers training opportunities for individuals working in museums and cultural heritage management, or those seeking a career in the sector. The Lead manages the IIP, supervising approximately eight interns per year, and collaborates with the IIP Steering Group and MOA Working Group to develop policies, processes, and program components. The Lead coordinates placement training, manages the budget, prepares reports, and fosters relationships that link interns with cultural and heritage institutions across British Columbia and beyond.
Responsibilities Develop intern application policies, materials and processes in partnership with the IIP Steering Group and the MOA Working Group, including marketing, recruitment, job postings, adjudication, placement scheduling, and scope of learning.
Create a program timeline and work with MOA staff and community partners to execute tasks and achieve goals.
Establish linkages with external organizations and facilitate field placements with partnering Nations or local BC institutions.
Manage the program budget, including planning, reporting, and overseeing all program expenditures.
Support fundraising and grant applications related to the program.
Identify internal placement supervisors within MOA staff.
Connect interns with UBC programs and resources such as the Office of Indigenous Strategic Initiatives, the First Nations House of Learning, the Indigenous Support Research Initiative, the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, the First Nations and Endangered Languages Program, and the Indigitization Program.
Offer guidance and support for interns’ research on education, training, and career pathways, including internship networks and programs in Canada and elsewhere.
Assist with interns’ applications and interview preparation, providing coaching, references, and resources to enhance their prospects for further education and employment.
Create linkages to additional training programs and career development opportunities across Canada.
Ensure all activities are conducted in a climate of mutual respect and cultural safety, in alignment with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s Calls to Action.
Provide primary supervision, guidance, and support for interns, including arranging travel to Vancouver or other host communities, securing housing, and serving as a point of contact with home communities and families.
Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
Minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including those in conflict with one’s own.
Demonstrated commitment to enhancing awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications Experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities.
Experience managing similar programs or projects.
Preference for candidates with Indigenous ancestry.
Skills & Knowledge Knowledge of and sensitivity toward Indigenous cultural heritage.
Strong interpersonal skills and diplomacy.
Organizational skills and effective time management.
Proficiency in establishing relationships with steering committees, working groups, partnering Nations, and BC institutions.
Ability to assess training requirements and develop, coordinate, lead, and evaluate training initiatives.
Capability to mentor and coach staff, serving as a resource.
Resource identification and effective management (people, materials, assets, budgets).
Instructional program and course design and delivery.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Efficient task coordination and information organization.
Group facilitation skills to achieve desired outcomes.
Sound judgment and decision-making.
Preparation of cost estimates and projections.
