Municipal Engineer – Major Projects
The Municipal Engineer – Major Projects is a senior‑level civil engineering role supporting the delivery of large‑scale transportation and municipal infrastructure programs in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Reporting to a Project Manager, the position is embedded within multidisciplinary Major Projects teams delivering complex roadway and municipal systems across provincial and municipal jurisdictions.
The role focuses on civil roadway and municipal infrastructure design for major projects, including provincial highway facilities and municipal roadways, across preliminary and detailed design phases. Project scope includes freeways, interchanges, intersections, urban and rural roadways, and integrated coordination with water, wastewater, drainage, and utility systems. The position contributes technical leadership across design development, documentation, and quality control.
The ideal candidate brings extensive experience delivering MTO and municipal transportation projects, strong technical authority in roadway and municipal systems, and the ability to guide junior engineers while maintaining client and stakeholder relationships in a regulated public infrastructure environment.
Responsibilities- Reporting to the Project Manager, the Municipal Engineer, Major Projects, will be responsible for supporting the overall success of major projects in Canada.
- Act as a transportation engineer for both provincial MTO highways and local municipal roadways in both preliminary and detailed design components of major projects.
- Lead and manage the civil roadway components of major projects from inception to completion, including freeways, urban and rural multi‑lane and two‑lane facilities, interchanges, and intersections, and incorporating data from other disciplines such as water main, storm and sanitary services, wet and dry utilities, and drainage improvements.
- Provide technical guidance, support, and oversight to junior engineers and technical staff working on your projects.
- Prepare technical reports, contract documents, design drawings, quantity estimates, and cost estimates.
- Create and review or perform quality control checks on plans, profiles, and design quantities in Civil 3D/InRoads/Open Roads Design format.
- Complete initial site inspections and field work for design assignments.
- Maintain positive client relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Keep current on the latest design tools and aids in CAD, Civil 3D, Microstation, InRoads, Open Roads Design, in consultation with senior CAD staff.
- University degree in Civil Engineering.
- Licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), with minimum 10 years’ experience.
- Developed an excellent reputation working with MTO/municipalities in a consulting engineering environment.
- Experience with highway engineering and a strong understanding of the consulting engineering environment.
- Knowledge of highway engineering policies, regulations, guidelines, and operational procedures.
- Demonstrated experience in detailed design work with proven design capabilities.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, with clients, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, problem‑solving skills, and ability to think creatively.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle with valid registration and insurance.
