Position Summary

Reports to:

Survey Manager. The Assistant Surveyor supports construction surveying activities by assisting with field measurements, layout, data collection, and documentation to ensure work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with project specifications. Working under the direction of senior survey staff, this role helps maintain survey control points, verify drawings, operate and care for equipment, and contribute to quality checks and as-built records.

The Assistant Surveyor plays a key role in ensuring reliable field data and smooth coordination between survey, engineering, and construction teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage survey subcontracts, including scope definition, coordination, performance monitoring, quality assurance, and invoice validation.
  • Lead survey crews in field operations, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with project specifications.
  • Plan and oversee layout and stakeout activities across all construction phases.
  • Review and validate survey data to ensure adherence to tolerances, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and review stakeout packages, work plans, and field instructions for crews and subcontractors.
  • Maintain control networks, benchmarks, and accurate survey records for complex projects.
  • Perform and oversee QA/QC checks on survey deliverables and daily field tasks.
  • Communicate survey findings, risks, and progress to project managers, engineers, and stakeholders.
  • Oversee as-built data collection and integration into digital project records (CAD/BIM).
  • Mentor junior surveyors and support adoption of new technologies and best practices.
Education And Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • 5-8 years of progressive experience in construction surveying.
  • Strong knowledge of survey practices, standards, tolerances, and safety regulations.
  • Proficiency with Civil 3D and common survey software.
  • Proven ability to interpret complex construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors or external survey providers preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Marine or maritime project experience is an asset.
  • Professional designation or eligibility (e.g., C.L.S., BCLS) is an asset.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.
