Overview

BCRTC maintains and operates the Sky Train Expo and Millennium Lines from central facilities in south Burnaby, connecting downtown Vancouver to the surrounding cities. With future expansions underway, the company offers opportunities across administration, engineering, maintenance, field operations, and more.

Responsibilities

The Systems Technologist ensures the security, accessibility, and reliability of BCRTC’s Train Operations Systems, working closely with technologists, technicians, systems specialists, and engineers.

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of multiple Train Operations systems and support network architecture, server and application design and implementation.
  • Work closely with other technologists, technicians, systems specialists and engineers to understand different train operations systems, software, and hardware.
  • Analyze current and future states of the Operations network; design and implement a multi‑layered Train Operations network architecture; develop roadmaps to address gaps.
  • Apply American Public Transportation Association (APTA), Center of Internet Security Standards (CIS) and other industry‑recognized standards.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and integrate new systems technology into the Train Operations network.
  • Participate in defining specifications for the procurement of hardware and software for the Train Operations infrastructure.
  • Provide expertise on projects related to Train Operations systems by meeting with BCRTC business units, the Asset Integration Office, and other stakeholders to determine network and systems requirements.
  • Assist with the integration of capital projects and support the connection of new systems to the Train Operations network.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates, material selection, manpower requirements and schedules for assigned projects, working independently or under the direction of the Systems Manager.
  • Create, test, and monitor pilot projects and assess results.
  • Maintain awareness of network and systems technologies; make recommendations to the manager regarding their application.
  • Administer, maintain, and improve the security and performance of BCRTC Train Operations network, servers and systems technologies by developing and supporting the Train Operations network Security Zone.
  • Design, maintain, and administer systems access control, Group Policy/Group Management (GPGM), and centralized logging of access to files, folders and systems.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Train Operations network data backup, restoration and Disaster Recovery.
  • Perform and document security audits of the Operations network/system.
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive patch management program for proprietary vendors and commercial off‑the‑shelf Train Operations systems software and firmware.
  • Monitor, analyze, and test network performance; identify and resolve issues and perform root‑cause analysis; produce monthly reports on network performance.
  • Evaluate security tools and applications, recommend, and implement changes to improve system and operational efficiency.
  • Deliver technical support to system users to help resolve issues with Train Operations systems; liaise with vendors and support representatives when needed.
  • Resolve and troubleshoot advanced systems application–related issues.
  • Maintain and update hardware and software on BCRTC Train Operations network/system by planning, configuring, implementing, testing and troubleshooting hardware and software changes, including servers, firewalls and core network switches.
  • Perform virtualization and hardening of computer systems; configure and roll out workstations on the Operations network.
  • Document and propose system changes to the Change Management Committee.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation of the Train Operations Network/system by creating and updating network drawings and schematics; performing procedures for hardware and software installations and upgrades; maintaining records of network and system software and hardware configurations; ensuring all changes meet Change Management Board documentation standards; documenting resolutions to network and systems problems; providing documented recommendations and solutions…
