Position: Intermediate Consultant (Mine Water Management)

Are you passionate about water stewardship supporting responsible mine water management through the full mine life cycle, from early-stage mine planning to relinquishment?

This role is open in Calgary, Saskatoon or remote opportunities in Vancouver or Montréal.

At Okane, we believe that integrated mine closure planning is just the starting point to ‘Help Create a Better Tomorrow’. We work with mining companies to return land responsibly and safely, enabling what comes next to serve both people and the planet. Our work challenges the status quo — we advocate for meaningful partnerships with communities, including Indigenous rights holders, and design solutions that create lasting financial, environmental, and social value.

From early-stage planning through to relinquishment, we’re helping reshape the future of mining — and we’re looking for people who want to be part of that transformation.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will work closely with our mining clients and technical teams on projects that span diverse sites with unique challenges to develop practical solutions for mine water management.

  • Performing climate, hydrologic and hydraulic analyses to support peak flow, flood control and erosion mitigation studies.
  • Completing hydrologic and engineering designs for mining clients, incorporating climate change assessments to support planning and design of water infrastructure.
  • Developing and managing mine water balance models to support site-wide water balance assessments and water management planning.
  • Designing and assessing mine water management infrastructure, focusing on surface water infrastructure such as channels, ponds and sizing pumping systems.
  • Contributing to the development of water quality models.
  • Collaborating with Okane’s multidisciplinary teams to support the development and implementation of closure visioning, planning and execution.
  • Providing guidance for the planning and execution of water monitoring programs.
  • Completing technically proficient reports that meet project requirements.
  • Providing support for proposals of varying complexity in technical expertise.
  • Interacting competently with internal and external stakeholders of varying levels of expertise.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Civil, Environmental or Water Resources Engineering.
  • Holds a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or is eligible to obtain it.
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in water management within the mining industry.
  • Experience and aptitude for multidisciplinary work and dynamic team environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in hydrology, hydraulics, water infrastructure design, and water balance modelling.
  • Proficiency using water modelling software such as Gold Sim, HEC-HMS, and other relevant numerical modelling programs.
  • Experience with overseeing and supervising the construction of water management infrastructure is an asset.
  • Experience in integrating source terms to water balance models and developing water quality models is an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for both business and technical writing and clear and effective collaboration within project teams.
  • Knowledge of Canadian water regulations, codes and environmental standards including relevant professional procedures and practices is an asset.
Expectations for this Role
  • Understanding of mining process, lifecycle and mine closure concepts.
  • Build and maintain strong professional relationships with clients and actively engage in business development initiatives, exploring innovative opportunities beyond your project scope.
  • Possess leadership skills including communication, accountability, honesty, empathy, creativity, responsibility, and flexibility.
  • Embody Okane’s Core Vision (Help Create a Better Tomorrow).
  • Consistently model Okane Core Values (Passionate, Smart and Clever, Positive, Thoughtful and Caring, and Humble).
  • Adapt and prioritize navigating unexpected challenges.
  • Actively engage in critical thinking, evaluating and recommending clever solutions in your work.
  • Consistently model Okane’s Core Values in daily work and client interactions and serve as a trusted voice within the team.
  • Integrate health, safety and environmental (HSE) considerations into every aspect of work, completing hazard assessments, meeting internal procedures, participating in safety training, and promoting a safety culture.
