Position Overview
Power Your Future with Qualus in our T&D business as a HVAC Mechanical Engineer, based out of our Calgary, AB or Vancouver, BC offices. This position is a detail-oriented and innovative HVAC Mechanical Engineer responsible for designing, and optimizing heating, cooling, and ventilation systems for Utility Power projects (i.e. substations, gas insulated systems, control rooms, etc.) You will work closely with Electrical, Structural, Architects, Contractors, Suppliers, and Project Managers to deliver energy-efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective climate solutions.
Responsibilities- Serve as the Mechanical Discipline Lead and Professional of Record for substation projects
- System Design:
Develop comprehensive HVAC designs, including ductwork layouts, piping, and equipment sizing for new builds and retrofits, such as Gas Insulated Substations and Switch Yards, Control Rooms, and other Power related buildings and structures. - Document Production: develop design documents to include specifications, 2-dimensional drawings, reports, inspections
- Load Calculations:
Perform precise heating and cooling load calculations and psychrometric analyses to determine equipment requirements - Energy Modeling:
Evaluate and optimize system designs for maximum energy efficiency and sustainability - Compliance & Safety:
Ensure all mechanical designs comply with local building codes, industry standards, and environmental regulations - Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Coordinate with architects, electrical engineers, and equipment suppliers to integrate HVAC systems into the overall building infrastructure seamlessly; work with Fire Protection subcontractors with their development of Fire Protection Systems. - Assist with the bidding process, review shop drawings, and conduct site inspections during construction to ensure systems are installed correctly
- Review of vendor documents against specifications
- Lead projects from conception through construction and commissioning, including mentoring junior engineers and designers
- Coordinate and oversee the development of resource planning, scope, schedule, and budget for the project discipline team.
- Coordinate construction and commissioning activities with utility clients and subcontractors
- Respond to requests from construction sites and complete project documentation, including as-builts, calculations, and returning data to clients
- Troubleshooting:
Diagnose complex mechanical issues and recommend effective, long-lasting solutions
- Education:
Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university - Certifications:
Canadian Professional Engineering Designation (P.Eng.) or the ability to register as a Professional Engineer with EGBC;
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the United States is considered an asset. - Experience:
3-5 years of proven experience in HVAC system design and mechanical engineering. - Technical
Skills:
Proficiency in engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Carrier HAP, or Trane TRACE 700). - Knowledge:
Deep understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and psychrometrics - Working Knowledge:
Canadian codes and standards (NBC-AB Edition, NECB, ASHRAE, NFPA, SMACNA etc.) - Soft Skills:
Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
