Job Description

The Intermediate Protection & Control (P&C) Engineer supports the design, analysis, and implementation of protection and control systems for transmission, distribution, and generation projects. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, this role contributes across all phases of the project lifecycle, from conceptual design and detailed engineering through construction support, testing, and commissioning. The engineer combines P&C design with hands-on technical work, including protection studies, relay settings development, relay configuration, and control system design, to deliver reliable and compliant protection solutions for major utility and power-sector clients.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and development of Protection & Control systems for transmission, distribution, and generation projects.
  • Perform protection studies and analyze electrical system data to identify fault conditions and ensure appropriate protection schemes.
  • Prepare and perform protection calculations to develop relay settings that meet project and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, configure, and program protection relays and related devices, including preparation of configuration files for field implementation.
  • Design protection and control schematics and related drawings for substations and other electrical facilities.
  • Support engineering studies related to Protection & Control, including coordination, selectivity, and system reliability assessments.
  • Prepare technical documentation such as design reports, calculations, specifications, and test procedures.
  • Contribute to the design of electrical equipment upgrades and replacements from a P&C design perspective.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, designers, field personnel, and clients to ensure effective delivery of protection solutions.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including responding to field queries and clarifying design intent.
  • Participate in site visits, commissioning, and testing activities as required to validate protection schemes and relay settings.
  • Assist in programming and configuring protection devices to align with project requirements and utility standards.
  • Support the development and improvement of engineering processes, standards, and procedures where applicable.
  • Contribute to proposal development and estimating activities when needed, providing technical input on scope and effort.
  • Work within utility, consulting engineering, or power generation environments to support ongoing capital and utility programs.
  • Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Registered Professional Engineer ( with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligibility and willingness to obtain this registration.
  • Minimum 5 years of Protection & Control design experience within the transmission, distribution, and/or generation sectors.
  • Experience designing Protection & Control systems for substations and related electrical infrastructure.
  • Experience working on electrical equipment upgrades and replacements from a design capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing calculations to set relays and develop relay settings.
  • University-level coursework or equivalent training in Protection & Control engineering.
  • Proficiency in Protection & Control design for transmission, distribution, and generation applications.
  • Experience with protection relays, P&C schematics, and relay configuration.
  • Ability to analyze electrical system data to identify fault conditions and determine appropriate protection responses.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar CAD tools for preparing P&C drawings (AutoCAD preferred).
  • Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • PLC programming experience.
  • Exposure to SCADA systems and their integration with protection and control schemes.
  • Experience performing and/or reviewing grounding studies.
  • Experience developing and improving engineering processes, standards, and procedures.
  • Experience developing and reviewing relay settings for transmission, distribution, generation, and substation applications.
  • Proposal development and estimating experience for engineering projects.
