Role description:

We are seeking a Senior Marine Structures Engineer to act as the marine and coastal technical authority on site for our construction supervision team in Vancouver. The role is suited to a specialist who has built a career around waterfront and in water structures and who is comfortable carrying professional responsibility for that work while it is being built.

This is a full-time field-based position. The Senior Marine Structures Engineer supports the site team during Engineering Services During Construction as marine works move from design completion through installation, testing and completion certification, covering quay walls, wharves, jetties, dolphins, marine piling, sheet pile and combi wall systems, revetments, breakwaters, scour protection, cofferdams, marine access structures and associated temporary works.

The position carries Engineer of Record responsibility for the marine structures under supervision, including the conduct and documentation of field reviews, the assessment of departures from the design basis, and the certification that the constructed marine works substantially conform with the design. The role is not a design office position and does not involve production work in structural analysis or modelling software.

What is required is the judgement to read a marine structure as it is being built and to reach a sound position on it.

Role accountabilities:

In this role you will act as the Engineer of Record for the marine structures under your supervision. You will set and carry out the field review programme for marine works, document each review, apply your professional seal where required, and certify that the constructed works substantially conform with the design documents and the applicable codes. Where an as-built condition departs from the design basis, you will assess the effect on capacity, durability and service life and set out a clear engineering position on acceptance, repair or replacement.

You will review contractor submissions for the marine works, including piling method statements, driveability assessments, pile driving records, welding and coating procedures, marine concrete placement methods, precast handling and lifting plans, temporary works designs and marine spread arrangements, and you will confirm that each is consistent with the design assumptions.

You will attend and witness marine construction activities, covering pile installation and set criteria, tolerance verification, underwater placement, back filling behind retaining structures, armour and filter layer placement, and geotextile and scour protection installation. You will confirm hold points, release work for cover, and record what you have seen in a form that stands up later.

You will interpret geotechnical, survey and bathymetric information as it becomes available, comparing it against the design basis, and you will advise on the treatment of variable seabed conditions, obstructions, over dredge and unexpected material. You will review dredging and backfill records against the design profiles and support the resolution of the change that follows.

You will provide technical direction on marine durability, including cathodic protection, coating systems, concrete cover and mix design in the tidal and splash zones, and on the corrosion, allowances applied to steel elements. You will support the assessment of berthing and mooring arrangements, fender and bollard installation and load testing.

You will support underwater inspection planning, direct the dive team on what is to be inspected and recorded, and review dive and survey reporting against the acceptance criteria. You will contribute to the non conformance process on the marine works, support the engineering assessment of any…
