About the Company

Charter is an award-winning Canadian IT Solutions and Managed Services Provider founded in 1997. With offices across Canada, Charter delivers innovative IT solutions, managed services, project delivery, consulting, and staff augmentation expertise to organizations nationwide. Our mission is to align people, processes, and technologies to help clients enhance communication, optimise performance, and modernise their operations. Using business architecture methodology and human‑centered design, we guide clients through successful digital transformations, uncover new opportunities, and accelerate growth.

The Network Designer, Facilities & Power is responsible for the design and standardisation of telecommunications facilities and supporting infrastructure, including central offices, remote huts and cabinets, points of presence (POPs), and critical power and environmental systems. Working as part of an integrated Network Design team, this role develops complete, construction‑ready design packages that include equipment layouts, DC power and battery systems, standby generation, commercial power integration, grounding and bonding, cable management, and environmental support systems.

This position plays a key role in advancing a standardised and scalable approach to network infrastructure design. The successful candidate will develop and maintain repeatable facility designs, approved equipment standards, and consistent engineering documentation to support efficient deployment, operations, and maintenance across both new and existing sites.

As a hands‑on intermediate‑to‑senior‑level role, the Network Designer manages projects through the full lifecycle, from concept and detailed design to construction support and as‑built documentation. The position also develops bills of materials, cost estimates, and technical documentation to support procurement, capital planning, and network expansion initiatives. Working within a distributed team environment, the successful candidate will provide technical leadership in facilities and power design while helping establish and evolve organisational standards, processes, and best practices.

Key Responsibilities Facilities & Power Design Standardisation
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standardised design templates for telecommunications facilities, including cabinets, remote huts, points of presence, and central office expansions.
  • Create and manage pre‑engineered layouts, power architectures, battery configurations, and material standards to promote consistency, scalability, and operational efficiency.
  • Establish and maintain approved equipment and materials standards for rectifiers, batteries, generators, transfer switches, racking systems, cable management solutions, and related infrastructure.
  • Define and enforce drawing, labeling, naming, and documentation standards that support efficient operations, maintenance, and knowledge transfer.
  • Assess existing facilities against established standards, identify improvement opportunities, and develop remediation plans aligned with future capital projects.
  • Maintain version‑controlled standards, typical drawings, and reference designs, incorporating feedback from Network Operations, Field Services, and other stakeholders.
  • Promote standardisation as the default design approach while documenting and managing site‑specific deviations where required.
Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in telecommunications infrastructure design, including central offices, inside plant environments, data centres, or closely related electrical design and installation roles.
  • Strong understanding of telecommunications facility power systems, including
-48 VDC power distribution, battery systems, standby power generation, and AC electrical distribution.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for the development of engineering drawings and Microsoft Excel for documentation, material tracking, and project support.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and develop electrical single‑line diagrams, panel schedules, equipment layouts, and related technical drawings.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with experience developing bills of materials (BOMs), quantity takeoffs, and design documentation.
  • Proven ability to work independently in a remote or distributed environment while effectively coordinating with internal stakeholders, field technicians, contractors, and vendors.
  • Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to project sites, including remote and rural locations as required.
