Location:
Knoxville TN, Madison WI, Boston MA or Vancouver BC
Salary:
Highly Competitive Plus Benefits
Contract:
Permanent, full time
Reporting to:
Director of Thermofluids Engineering
The Cryogenic Engineer will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and validating cryogenic systems that support superconducting magnets and other low-temperature components in our stellarator program. This role requires expertise in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics, as well as experience performing analytical and numerical evaluations of cryogenic performance. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced R&D environment.
You will also:
- Perform analytical thermodynamic, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer calculations on cryogenic systems to support design and performance evaluation.
- Conduct numerical analysis and modeling of cryogenic systems, including transient and steady-state behavior.
- Support the design, specification, and integration of cryogenic hardware such as piping, heat exchangers, insulation systems, valves, and cryogenic distribution components.
- Develop and maintain system-level thermal/fluid models to inform design decisions.
- Collaborate with T1E to design and locate the cryogenic valve boxes on the cryostat.
- Draft PFDs for the system, ability to write component specifications for valves, piping, etc. would be advantageous.
- Mature the PFDs to P&IDs ideally having performed at least 1 round of HAZAN and HAZOPs and having this reflected in the P& PDR.
- Collaborate closely with magnet engineering, vacuum systems, plasma physics, and power systems teams to ensure cryogenic system compatibility and performance.
- Analyze experimental and operational data to validate models and identify system improvements.
- Support cryogenic system testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operations
- Contribute to requirements development, safety analyses, and documentation for cryogenic subsystems.
- Coordinate with suppliers and partners regarding cryogenic equipment, components, and integration needs.
- Mentoring junior engineers in such engineering analysis and processes.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience in analytical thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics calculations.
- Experience performing analytical numerical analysis of thermal/fluid systems using tools such as ANSYS, COMSOL, OpenFOAM, AFT Arrow, REFPROP, GASPAK, HePAK or similar.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally in a collaborative engineering environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Experience in Chemical and/or Process Engineering.
- Understanding of cryogenic system design principles, instrumentation, and materials behavior at low temperatures.
- Experience with cryogenic systems for superconducting magnets, fusion devices, particle accelerators, or space systems.
- Familiarity with cryogenic fluids such as liquid helium and…
