Reporting to the Assistant Director, Operations, the Manager, Theatre coordinates the technical operations, safety, and facility management for all campus performance spaces, productions, concerts, and events. This is a highly collaborative role that works closely with students, staff, and teachers to support school events, manage theatrical systems, and train students in stagecraft.
This role is based in-person, from 8:00am – 4:30pm. However, this role requires a high degree of flexibility; frequent evening and weekend work is required to support the production schedules and operational needs of the School.
This position is not eligible for remote work.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Responsible for the technical operations of all CHS productions, concerts, major assemblies, guest lectures, rentals, and other community events in the Theatre, drama studio, assembly hall, and other locations as required.
Produce two major school theatre productions each year:
Middle School Musical and Senior School Production.
Participate in the play selection process, taking into consideration technical demands and costs.
Secure performance rights and the delivery of production materials from licensing agencies.
Facilitate the design, technical, and logistical aspects of each production, including scenery, rigging, props, costumes, lighting, sound, and projection.
Hire technical, construction, and design specialists as needed.
Oversee teacher co‑curricular involvement in the productions, including scheduling and training (tickets, front of house, posters, etc).
Establish operating policies and guidelines for the safe use of the school’s theatre facilities and performance spaces, and proactively communicate and implement these to students, teachers and staff.
Program and operate theatrical lighting, sound, and video systems in the theatre and drama studio.
Live stream and/or create video and audio recordings of events when requested.
Setup temporary AV systems around campus (sports days, outdoor band performances, etc).
Facilitate live translation services as required.
Participate in bi‑weekly whole school operations meetings, and assist in the planning of school events.
Perform regular maintenance and repairs on theatre equipment.
Coordinate the movement of choir risers, acoustic shells, and the grand piano on and off stage to accommodate the different needs of performance groups and classes.
Train, schedule, and supervise the student tech crew in the areas of lighting, sound, projection, stage management, and backstage safety.
Train staff and teachers on the use of theatre and AV equipment as required.
Responsible, in conjunction with the IT department, for the AV systems in Manrell Hall, the junior and senior school gyms, and the junior school atrium, as these are frequently used as event and performance venues.
Oversee the Theatre and Foyer calendars, which include class schedules and event bookings, and find solutions to schedule conflicts; this involves daily communication with teachers and staff, as these spaces are in high demand.
Provide AV support and facility supervision/management for rental events in the theatre and other Crofton venues as required.
Partner with the IT Department to ensure AV systems, equipment, and services operate efficiently and effectively.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of experience working as a technician in the professional theatre or live events industry. Experience as a Technical Director or Production Manager is highly desirable.
Experience working with or mentoring youth is highly preferred.
Clear Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector) is a mandatory condition of employment.
Skills/Competences
Technical Expertise:
Strong working knowledge of digital lighting and sound consoles and routing systems. Expertise in stagecraft, rigging safety, lighting design, and live sound mixing.
Communication &
Collaboration:
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with students, educators, rental clients, and staff.
Project & Time Management:
Highly organized with a proven ability to manage multiple production schedules, timelines, and budgets simultaneously.
