We are the pre-eminent activist investor in real estate in Canada. Our approach to underwriting opportunities allows us to invest with conviction and actively work to narrow the value gap in our investee companies/REITs.
In 2023, Sandpiper broadened its investment mandate to include acquiring mid-market Canadian businesses across various industries. This initiative led to the successful closing of our first acquisition under this vertical in December 2024.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Research Associate will assist members of the Investment Team to conduct research and analysis on real estate investment opportunities as well as our mid-market investment mandate. The Research Associate will also provide support to the Investment Team on due diligence, valuations, and the preparation of presentations and materials for internal and external stakeholders. The Research Associate position is a developmental role with candidates expected to become an Analyst on the Investment Team upon the demonstration of consistent exemplary performance.
We are looking for a highly motivated and intellectually curious candidate with strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent presentation abilities, and superior analytical skills. We enjoy working with quick learners who thrive on diving deep into new topics and challenges.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Multifunction Research Support
Synthesize market information to be used in valuation, appraisals, competitive analysis, industry analysis, negotiation support and various other applicationsCompile and analyze relevant company and industry information from a broad range of sources such as financial databases, industry publications, financial statements and public disclosuresProvide feedback on investment hypotheses while continuously reviewing real estate market and other industry trendsMaintain and update deal flow databasePrepare presentations and materials for various internal and external stakeholdersInvestment Due Diligence and Valuation
Support the investment team to perform deep dive research, analysis and comprehensive due diligence on investment opportunitiesAssist in developing and maintaining complex financial models to analyze transactions (incorporating operating drivers, historical and forecast financial statements, multiple capital structures and exit valuation and return analysis, as well as scenario and sensitivity analysis)Perform valuation analysis, including precedent transaction, comparable company, and DCF analysisThis job description may not be inclusive of all assigned duties, responsibilities, or aspects of the job described, and may be amended at any time at the sole discretion of Sandpiper.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Undergraduate degree in commerce, business, economics, finance, or a related field0 – 2 years of related work experienceStrong interest in investments and a genuine curiosity about businessWillingness to pursue or actively working towards a CFA designationStrong research, project management, financial modeling, analytical and valuation skillsAbility to systematically manage a challenging workload and meet stringent deadlinesAdvanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Power Point Desire to work in a team environmentAbility to work full-time from our Vancouver officeLegally qualified to work in CanadaSALARY RANGE
$60,000 to $70,000 annually and a performance-based bonus
