Job Description Summary

UBC Financial Reporting is responsible for the integrity and transparency of the University’s financial information, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements and internal controls. The team leads the preparation and consolidation of UBC’s audited financial statements and statutory reports to senior leadership, government bodies and external stakeholders. Financial Reporting supports strategic decision-making through accurate financial data, analysis and insights, and plays a central role in institutional accountability, risk management, and long-term financial sustainability.

The department also leads the coordination of the annual financial audit and serves as a key steward of the Universities fiscal reputation.

The Senior Financial Analyst position prepares the University’s consolidated quarterly and annual financial statements, regulatory submissions and various annual regulatory reporting requirements. This position also prepares the audited annual financial statements and the related note disclosures and advises auditors regarding information requests, this includes: the preparation of complex analysis to explain variances, investigate exceptions, assess correct accounting treatment and identifying process improvements.

The Senior Financial Analyst will develop and implement new policies and procedures to improve financial management and business processes throughout the portfolio.

Organizational Status

The Senior Financial Analyst reports to the Manager, Financial Reporting.

The position will work closely with all members on the Financial Reporting team and work in collaboration with other departments within the University including, but not limited to:
Budget and Planning Office, Financial Operations, IT Services, and Internal Audit.

Work Performed

1. Prepare Financial Statements and Manage Reporting Cycles - Independently prepare, analyze, and finalize the University's quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements, including supporting schedules, reconciliations, and disclosures. Ensure timely and accurate completion of monthly close and year-end processes in compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and University policies.

2. Prepare Financial Information for External Stakeholders - Prepare and submit financial and statistical reports for external stakeholders, including provincial and federal governments. Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with relevant legislation, funding agreements, and reporting requirements.

3. Develop and Interpret Accounting Policies - Prepare accounting policy documentation, technical position papers, and memos. Advise stakeholders on the application of accounting standards and promote consistent policy implementation across the University.

4. Ensure Proper Stewardship of Restricted Funds - Review monitor transactions for restricted funds, including endowments, research grants, and scholarships to ensure financial activity…
