About Musqueam

We are traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people. Today, we are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name Musqueam relates back to the River Plant, the name of the plant is məθkʷəy̓.

There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) - People of the River Plant. We have always moved throughout our territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people.

Under the direction of the Environmental Stewardship Manager, the Environmental Stewardship Referral Coordinator (Referral Coordinator) will support leading the team responsible for environmental stewardship within Musqueam’s Traditional Territory. The Referral Coordinator will coordinate the Environmental Stewardship Department’s (ESD) team of Analysts in the ongoing review of incoming referrals from external agencies. The Referral Coordinator will provide guidance and support on policy, programs and projects related to Musqueam environment and stewardship issues.

The Referral Coordinator will also participate in the development of strategies and engagement processes related to the protection, enhancement and restoration of ecosystems and habitats. The Referral Coordinator will establish and maintain liaison with a wide variety of internal and external contacts, including both governmental and non-governmental bodies, and assist in directing the work of consultants and staff on a project basis.

• Receive, track, triage, and distribute incoming referrals from various sources;
• Coordinate, compile, and assess referral responses from ESD and other departments;
• Ensure engagement processes and referral submissions meet required time frames;
• Coordinate ESD staff and contractors on various projects and plans;
• Provide technical expertise and recommendations to inform decision making processes;
• Develop, implement, and review internal and co-developed strategies and systems for referral engagement with various government agencies;
• Design and oversee data collection and analysis strategies for complex research and policy analysis projects;
• Review, analyse, and prepare summaries, presentations, and graphical representations of proposals and reports;
• Identify, assess and evaluate data/information required to support critical decision making processes within the public sector;
• Assist management in preparing briefing notes, internal/external reports, summaries, discussion papers, factsheets, and other support related material;
• Leads or participates in technical meetings and working groups to coordinate information for multiple departments across the organization;
• Other related duties as required.

• Skill and Knowledge attained by the successful completion of a post‑secondary degree in biology, natural resource management or related field and a minimum of 2 years’ progressively responsible experience in environmental and First Nations issues, environmental policy, or broad‑level program management with considerable related experience within a local government or First Nations organization; or an equivalent combination of education, skills and experience.
• Proven experience working in and with environmental legislation, regulations and policies preferred; experience working with committee and/or Council structures.
