The Vancouver Police Department is proud to introduce the Retired Police Officer Program (RPOP), a temporary contract opportunity for retired officers to return to operational policing in a meaningful and flexible capacity.
RPOP allows retired members to continue serving the community, mentor younger officers, and remain connected to frontline policing – without the commitment of a full-time career.
A retired officer applicant must satisfy the basic requirements to apply for a temporary experienced contract police officer position:
- Eligible to retire, recently retired, or a serving Canadian police officer within the last three years
- Police recruit training provided by any of the following Canadian police training academies:
- RCMP Training Academy (Depot);
Ontario Police College - Chief Crowfoot Learning Centre (Calgary Police Service)
- Edmonton Police Service, Basic Recruit Training
- Lethbridge College
- Winnipeg Police Service, Police Recruit Training Academy
- Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
- Saskatchewan Police College
- École Nationale de Police du Québec
- Atlantic Police Academy
- Canadian Forces Military Police Academy or Justice Institute of British Columbia
- RCMP Training Academy (Depot);
- Must not be the subject of any current Police Act allegations, Professional Standards investigations, Independent Investigations Office complaints or equivalent disciplinary processes in other provinces
- Deployable to work patrol
- Pass a medical exam to confirm fit for duty
- Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s licence
- Able to pass all elements of the on-boarding process, which includes, but not limited to, VPD use-of-force qualifications
- Retiring member to express interest to Human Resources Inspector Jim Kenney about continuing to work for the VPD after retirement
- All required provincially mandated training courses, use-of-force, and firearms must be up to date prior to a contract offer, including CPR-C first aid. This allows the VPD contract member to be immediately deployable to patrol.
- Internal checks to be completed by Human Resources and Professional Standards
The VPD is proud to be named one of BC’s Top Employers for 2026.
The annual Top Employers program celebrates organizations across BC that create outstanding workplaces that prioritize continuous learning, support knowledge transfer from experienced staff, and welcome fresh perspectives of those entering the workforce.
The award underscores the VPD’s ongoing efforts to support officers and civilian staff through robust training, career development and wellness programs.
