Overview
As a military member, surgical technologists are responsible for providing an aseptic environment to perform surgical procedures in both static (domestic) and operational (mission) settings. They are integral members of the surgical team, providing perioperative care, assisting surgeons and anesthetists, and performing orthopedic castings during surgeries. They are also responsible for sterilizing medical instruments and handling surgical materials and equipment.

Main Responsibilities include:

  • Providing a clean and safe environment for patient treatment and assisting surgical teams throughout procedures
  • Maintaining equipment functionality, providing on-site training, and supervising operating rooms in the field
  • Supporting patient recovery post-anesthesia
  • Decontaminating, cleaning, maintaining, and stocking surgical tools and materials, including sterilization
  • Using and maintaining medical and resuscitation equipment
  • Documenting medical records, reports, and communications
  • Managing supplies and inventory control

Work Environment
Technicians typically work in civilian hospitals within military surgical teams or with civilian teams in Canada, with deployments abroad. Work hours are generally regular, Monday to Friday, but may include shifts or on-call duties depending on circumstances. Military career options include active service with assignments at bases across Canada, or reserve service with part-time commitments, typically one evening per week and some weekends, with potential for full-time employment.

Recruitment Programs
Direct enlistment options and subsidized study options are available. Candidates must have a diploma in auxiliary nursing, a valid practice permit as an IAA issued by a provincial authority, and a professional attestation letter. Certification in operative room technology is an asset.

Training and Education Programs
The Canadian Forces will fund tuition for recognized college programs, including basic military training and on-the-job training during summer months. Salary includes health and dental benefits and paid leave. Enrollees commit to serving for a specified period.

Initial training includes basic military training at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, followed by specialized courses in surgical nursing and on-the-job training in healthcare facilities. Advanced orthopedics courses are available for promotion.
