OverviewTaproot Community Support Services is a 100 percent employee‑owned organization through an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). We provide trauma‑informed care and housing for youth in the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) or a Delegated Aboriginal Agency across Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.
ProgramWe operate more than 90 contracts and serve over 1,600 children, youth, families, and people with diverse abilities. Our residential homes offer 24‑hour staffed environments, culturally responsive programming, long‑term therapeutic placements, and collaboration with education, mental health, and other service domains.
PositionThe role is casual/on‑call with the opportunity to apply for part‑time and full‑time positions as they become available. Positions require CUPE union membership. Employees work a variety of roles and shifts, including weekdays, weekends, and evening shifts such as 0700‑1500, 0800‑1600, 1500‑2300, 1600‑2400, 2300‑0700 and 2400‑0800.
In Your Role- Assess, set goals for, and evaluate progress of persons served
- Teach social skills through daily routines and activities
- Work one‑on‑one with youth
- Monitor safety and well‑being, promoting health and security
- Provide behavior management and emotional support, including crisis intervention
- Facilitate communication between program, school, family, and community
- Assist with personal hygiene and daily living activities
- Administer medications per established guidelines
- Maintain documentation such as communication books, case notes and incident reports
- Perform household duties including meal prep and cleaning
- Accompany individuals to appointments and outings (inside or outside)
- Participate in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Committee
- Safely operate motor vehicles for program‑related transportation
- Advocate for the needs and rights of persons served
- Carry out miscellaneous duties as required

- Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter
- Diploma or Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Disability Studies, Sociology, Healthcare Aide, PSW, Practical Nursing, Child and Youth Care, Adult Mental Health, Addictions, or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year of experience in child and youth care
- Other related fields of experience include Community Support Worker, Education Assistant, Special Needs, Behaviour Interventionist, Youth Worker
- Valid BC Driver’s Class 5 License and clean driver’s abstract; reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance is an asset for some programs
- Positive behavior supports experience and trauma‑informed care is an asset
- Valid CPR/First Aid, Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate (NVCI, Mandt or CPI) and Conflict Resolution Certificate (or ability to obtain within probation period)
- Successful applicants will be required to participate in MCFD screening and provide three professional references prior to confirmed employment
