Job Description Position Purpose Summary

The role of Residential Support Worker offers the opportunity for very meaningful work! The successful applicant will provide support and assistance to our residents, maintaining a safe and welcoming space for those in crisis situations. As the Residential Support Worker you will be part of a team that works together to make a tangible difference in the lives of our residents.

The casual Residential Support Worker needs to be available for a range of shifts including overnights (11:30pm‑8:30am), evenings (3:30pm‑12am), weekends and stat days.

Accountabilities
  • Assist with daily operations, laundry, food services prep, light cleaning.
  • Complete residence‑related administrative tasks as required.
  • Provide advice, guidance and support to residents when contacted for assistance.
  • Answer our 24‑hour crisis line and complete telephone screenings.
  • Complete intakes and house orientation for new residents.
  • Record relevant shift information in appropriate logs and other necessary forms and reports.
  • May facilitate programming for residents.
  • Consistently demonstrates respect and empathy for all residents.
  • Maintain availability for personal, practical, and moral support.
  • Liaise with referral sources and other external agencies as needed.
  • Ensure ongoing enforcement of policies.
  • Encourage residents to follow through with their chores.
  • Provide crisis intervention if an abuser locates KBH.
  • Mediate conflict/violence within the house if it occurs.
  • Perform regular security checks.
  • Ensure the house is tidy and clean.
  • May drive a resident to the hospital or an appointment if required.
  • Assist with childminding if required.
  • Create and revise documents to support the program.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and training.
  • Maintain client and house confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform other work‑related duties as assigned.
Financial and Materials Management
  • Minimal material responsibilities.
  • May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash.
  • The incumbent may make small program purchases under the authority of their supervisor.
  • The incumbent has no input into the annual budget.
Working Conditions
  • The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a transition house.
  • This position requires a moderate amount of keyboarding/manual record keeping and those served by the program may relate information that is highly disturbing in nature and will require intentional debrief and consultation.
  • The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
  • Isolation
  • Monotony
  • Odors
  • Stressful situations, including dealing with erratic and sometimes antagonistic behaviour
  • Verbal abuse
  • Work schedule affecting lifestyle
  • Exposure to bodily fluids, bodily waste
  • Exposure to drugs and alcohol
  • The incumbent may have little to no travel required.
  • The incumbent carries a phone while on duty and will work shifts.
  • The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illness due to:
  • Physical attacks by others
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to bodily fluids
  • Sharp objects
  • Other dangerous situations
  • Experience moderate physical exertion causing fatigue, may be required to lift up to 30 pounds.
