About Musqueam

We are traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people. Today, we are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name Musqueam relates back to the River Plant, the name of the plant is məθkʷəy̓.

There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) - People of the River Plant. We have always moved throughout our territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Worker works as a front-line representative on behalf of Musqueam Facilities for daily operations and during large or small events. The scope of duties includes a variety of tasks aimed at maintaining a clean, safe and welcoming environment throughout Facilities spaces. This includes maintaining highest standards for cleaning of interior spaces, upkeep of exterior areas, and ensuring the facility is secure and ready for staff, clients, and community members.

The Facilities Worker must maintain clean, organized, and well-prepared Facilities spaces, while being knowledgeable of community resources and services and supporting a welcoming experience for all visitors to the community.

  • Perform routine interior and exterior upkeep of Facilities spaces, including kitchens, washrooms, gymnasium, and common areas, maintaining high standards of cleanliness, organization, and overall presentation.
  • Perform pre- and post-event site reviews of facilities spaces.
  • Ensure shared spaces are consistently presentable, stocked, and prepared for daily use and scheduled activities.
  • Provide on-site event support with set up, tear down and cleaning for community, internal and external events.
  • Assist with the movement, arrangement, and upkeep of tables, chairs, and event equipment.
  • Monitor event spaces throughout use, responding to changing needs to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures, safe work practices, and required training to support a safe workplace for all.
  • Inspect outdoor spaces and respond to upkeep needs related to weather, events, and daily use.
  • Work collaboratively with Facilities staff to maintain consistent standards across all spaces.
  • Act as a visible and approachable presence within Facilities, supporting a welcoming experience for all users.
  • Respond promptly to requests and inquiries, ensuring a high level of service and care/
  • Ensures the safety, security and comfort of guests, staff, and volunteers.
  • Assists with orientation, training of event crew and volunteers as needed.
  • Assists with exhibits for community events and trade shows.
  • Other related duties as required.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Experience in building or facility upkeep is an asset.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, including proper handling of cleaning supplies, equipment, and materials is an asset.
  • Experience working within a First Nations or community-based environment is an asset.
  • Understanding of Musqueam community, culture, and resources.
  • Willingness to obtain certification in Food Safe, Serving It Right, First Aid and WHMIS.
  • Ability to multitask, problem solve under pressure and adapt in fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to take initiative.
