Position: Unit Supervisor, Hospice May's Place

Position Details

Salary range: CAD $52.39–$66.65 per hour.

Hours of work, including start and stop times, days off, work area and work site, may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and applicable provisions of the Collective Agreement and statutes.

Testing may be required. A criminal record check may be required.

Reporting & Leadership

Reporting to the Operations Leader, the Unit Supervisor provides leadership and oversight for the daily operations of the unit, ensuring high‑quality, patient‑centered care and efficient service delivery.

This role supervises and supports staff through scheduling, performance management, coaching, and professional development, while fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.

The Unit Supervisor coordinates multidisciplinary care, oversees program planning and quality improvement initiatives, implements clinical policies and standards, and manages unit resources and budgets.

The role also provides clinical leadership through patient assessments, treatment planning, case conferences, and ongoing support to the interdisciplinary team to ensure seamless, effective care.

Minimum Nurse‑to‑Patient Ratios (mNPR)

The minimum nurse‑to‑patient ratios (mNPR) set the minimum number of nurses required to safely care for patients on a given unit. mNPR provides a transparent approach to staffing that supports safe nursing practice and high‑quality patient care, and is tailored to the unique needs of each clinical program and specialty area.

Education & Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse with current practising registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing (required).
  • Five (5) years of recent related experience in a clinical specialty, including two (2) years of recent experience in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge and scope of nursing practice and relevant rules and regulations.
  • Ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures appropriate for the area of service.
  • Leadership skill and ability to organise, oversee and evaluate the function of a team.
  • Use evidence‑based practice to develop and implement standards of practice that guide work practices and quality and safety improvement initiatives.
  • Mentoring, coaching, facilitation and team‑building skills.
  • Fiscal planning and administration skills.

Your Day to Day
  • Lead daily unit operations by overseeing patient care delivery, staff assignments, scheduling and resource allocation to ensure safe, high‑quality, and efficient services.
  • Supervise and support staff performance through coaching, goal setting, performance evaluations, attendance management and corrective action when required.
  • Manage staffing and workforce planning, including recruitment, interviewing, hiring, scheduling, vacation planning, leave approvals and overtime management.
  • Provide clinical leadership and supervision by supporting care planning, case reviews, nursing assessments, therapeutic interventions and complex patient care decisions.
  • Foster staff development and education by identifying learning needs, coordinating training programmes, supporting orientation and promoting ongoing professional growth.
  • Ensure compliance with organisational policies, procedures and clinical standards, maintaining accountability for safety, quality, confidentiality and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead quality improvement and programme development initiatives by monitoring outcomes, analysing service performance, resolving operational issues and implementing improvements.
