Organization:
City of Vancouver Parks. Located on the traditional lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). This position supports Vancouver Parks in providing impartial and equitable access to services and ensuring ethical governance with a focus on sustainability, reconciliation, equity and quality of life.
Under direct supervision, the Operations Worker II is responsible for a variety of tasks, including horticulture maintenance, restoration project brushing, and trail maintenance, potentially involving heavy physical effort and use of hand and/or motorized tools. These roles contribute to the overall care and maintenance of Vancouver Parks.
Responsibilities- Perform heavy physical labour with strength, stamina and coordination; lift, push and pull heavy objects; work continuously with frequent bending or twisting.
- Operate tools and equipment used in park maintenance and turf care; work near moving machinery and in high traffic areas; climb ladders and work outdoors in all weather against uneven surfaces.
- Dig, plant, weed, rake and edge flowerbeds; sweep and clear pathways; cut grass; operate mowers and string trimmers; collect and remove litter.
- Contribute to general park operations tasks as required.
Education and Experience:
- Up to completion of high school and some work experience in basic labour; horticulture training or experience is an asset.
- Class 5 or higher Driver’s License for British Columbia.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
:
- Knowledge of safe work procedures; familiarity with tools, materials and equipment used in the work.
- Some knowledge of construction and landscape maintenance tasks; understanding of the functions of the branch and established practices.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement in routine or simple aspects of the work.
- Courteous and effective communication with the public; ability to use a variety of landscape maintenance tools.
- Sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination for heavy outdoor work in all weather.
- A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record is required.
- Five years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per year.
- Three years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable driving or equipment operating accident in any single year.
- Applicants with unsatisfactory driving records will have their applications reviewed in more detail.
- Must attach: copy of five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) dated within 14 days of posting; copy of five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History dated within 14 days of posting; if less than five years driving in BC, request out-of-province/country abstract and claims history.
