The individual will join a group with laboratory space within the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. The focus of this lab is on the study of gene expression and epigenetic changes in the placenta.
Duties will involve biological sample processing (mostly placenta), DNA/RNA extraction, aliquoting subsets of frozen tissue samples, extracting RNA, preparing and sending samples for bioanalysis, maintaining supplies and consumables, cleaning, washing and autoclaving instruments, general cleaning of areas used for extractions and lab work, organizing storage, preparing buffers and solutions, assisting with lab inventories, and other general lab‑related duties within a wet‑research laboratory.
Interaction with other lab members and other research labs within the institute. Minor biohazard and chemical hazards are present; with appropriate precautions they can be minimized. The individual will have desk space and computer access.
Work PerformedAfter initial training the incumbent will perform experiments under general supervision. The research associate will review tasks at least weekly and meet individually at least monthly. The incumbent is expected to train new members in the analysis techniques used and explain protocols.
Minimum Qualifications- High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum of two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- BSc in Biology or a related discipline with laboratory experience.
- At least one year of relevant laboratory experience.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment.
- Strong understanding of molecular biological techniques and adherence to strict biological and chemical safety regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to reliably carry out instructions independently, with minimal guidance.
- Experience using basic computer programs for data entry (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.), downloading and installing software, and organizing data files.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of basic laboratory safety procedures and techniques.
