Job SummaryReporting to the Vice President, External Affairs and Communications, the Economist is responsible for developing, managing, and producing CPABC's economic and public interest thought leadership through the use of provincial, regional, and national data. This position acts as the project manager for the BC Check‑Up economic analysis and surveys, CPABC Budget Submission, and issues monitoring for the province’s economic development regions.
The Economist translates complex economic insights into clear, accessible content for external audiences, including press releases, articles, and policy submissions. The Economist also supports organizational priorities through labour‑market analysis and collaboration with subject‑matter experts on public policy issues.
- Maintain, monitor and enhance the economic indicator framework and benchmarks, and author CPABC’s three annual BC Check‑Up releases.
- Maintain and develop bi‑annual BC Check‑Up surveys to generate member input for various reports and the budget submission.
- Develop editorial content to promote CPABC as a leader on important issues and the economy in general.
- Monitor economic trends on a provincial and regional basis, and provide editorial commentary on events that will have a substantive impact on BC's economy at a provincial and/or regional basis.
- Research and produce CPABC’s BC Budget Submission with recommendations in support of policies that will strengthen BC's economy and taxation system.
- Work with President & CEO and VP, EAC in building CPABC's government relations efforts.
- Ensure all content reflects CPABC's brand guidelines and promotes the CPA Vision while providing value for the membership.
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and credibility of all analysis.
- Oversee media relations related to thought leadership, including writing press releases and editorial commentary, monitoring the account, preparing daily media monitoring and news digests, and coordinating the quarterly Insights newsletter.
- Support CPABC's executive management committee on special projects that require a strong research, economics, or public interest lens (eg, labour‑market research; Leadership Update and other presentations; Environmental Scan).
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

Knowledge and Experience- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, or a related discipline.
- Three (3) plus years of relevant experience in a similar role with a focus on public policy development.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficient research skills in both economic and literature reviews.
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize large volumes of quantitative and qualitative data into meaningful economic analysis and insights.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor content to various audiences.
- Meticulous attention to detail and refined organizational skills.
- Strong problem‑solving and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to compose thoughtful, direct and impactful content that combines high‑level analysis and detail while remaining accessible and digestible for the public.
- Proven ability to prioritize competing requirements and deadlines under pressure.
Skills and Abilities
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field (eg, Economics, Public Policy).
- Data analysis experience using R, Python, etc.
- Experience using data visualization tools (eg, PowerBI, Tableau).
The starting annual salary for this position is between $82,000 – 97,350 per annum, based on candidates’ qualifications, experience, and internal parity. Exceptions may be considered with further review.
