Compensation Range$6,251.00 - $8,986.00 CAD Monthly

Job SummaryThe Department of Materials Engineering at UBC invites applications for a Research Scientist position in the Advanced Composite Materials and Structures (ACMS) Group.
The Research Scientist will provide technical leadership for research programs focused on the development, scale‑up, characterization, and application of sustainable carbon fibers and multifunctional composite materials. The position combines responsibilities in experimental research, laboratory operations, student supervision, technical reporting, and research program management.
The successful candidate will play a central role in advancing research activities related to sustainable carbon fiber manufacturing, advanced fibrous materials, multifunctional composites, and related materials processing technologies.
Organizational StatusReport to Dr. Yasmine Abdin
Work Performed- Develop protocols and methods for the production, processing, and characterization of carbon fibers, fibrous materials, and composite materials.
- Conduct research related to sustainable carbon fiber manufacturing, multifunctional composites, and advanced materials processing technologies.
- Develop, optimize, and scale carbon fiber manufacturing processes, including melt‑spinning, melt‑blowing, stabilization, and carbonization operations.
- Design, direct, and analyze laboratory experiments; interpret results and develop technical conclusions and recommendations.
- Perform materials characterization and testing of fibers, non‑woven materials, and composite structures using appropriate analytical techniques.
- Prepare technical reports, project deliverables, milestone reports, presentations, and documentation for research sponsors and funding agencies.
- Train and supervise undergraduate, graduate, co‑op, and internship students working collaboratively on research projects.
- Review scientific literature and assist in identifying future research directions and experimental approaches.
- Oversee laboratory records, standard operating procedures, technical documentation, and experimental databases.
- Oversee laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, laboratory safety activities, and recommend equipment and supply purchases.
Errors in judgment or procedural oversight could impact the accuracy and reliability of research findings, resulting in delays to project deliverables and potential loss of funding. Inappropriate handling of materials, equipment, or safety procedures may also pose risks to laboratory safety and operational continuity.

Minimum Qualifications- Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science. Minimum of one year of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
An MASc or PhD degree in Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated experience conducting experimental research in a laboratory environment.
- Demonstrated experience in alternative‑feedstock carbon fiber manufacturing, fibrous materials processing, or non‑woven materials manufacturing.
- Demonstrated experience in composite materials manufacturing and characterization.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare technical documentation and reports.
