The hours of work, including start and stop times, days off, work area and work site may be subject to change consistent with operations requirements and applicable provisions of the Collective Agreement and statutes.

Relational Security Officers play a critical role in reducing workplace violence and promoting cultural safety. Training for RSOs is based on trauma‑informed practice, integrating the knowledge of how people are affected by trauma into the anticipation, de‑escalation, and prevention of aggression in healthcare settings.

RSOs use effective and culturally informed communication to build healthy and positive relationships with patients, residents and visitors, creating a safe and welcoming environment for all. Relational Security Officers work at both St. Paul’s Hospital and Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.

Successful candidates must be available for 5 weeks of full‑time, in‑person training, commencing at the start date, without exceptions. Only qualified candidates will be contacted.

Education

Current BC Security Guard License, OFA Level I Certification, Certification of Training Completion in Advanced Security Training, one year’s recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Skills and Abilities

Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

Ability to operate related equipment.

On‑the‑job training RSOs receive additional training on equity, diversity and inclusion;
Indigenous cultural safety and humility; trauma‑informed practice; building healthy and positive relationships; and mental health and substance use.

Your Day to Day

Patrol buildings and grounds, including utilizing computerized surveillance equipment and video monitoring systems; enforce regulations and security procedures; identify risks, safety and security hazards and take appropriate action; check doors, windows and entrances, securing them to prevent unauthorized entry.

Respond to emergencies such as the Providence Health Care Disaster Plan, fire, and physically aggressive patients; assess the situation, consult with medical staff and others, and take appropriate action as required.

Investigate, resolve and report disturbances using non‑violent interventions; document and report incidents in accordance with established Protection Services procedures.

Provide security for Providence Health Care patients, as requested by the patient care team, to maintain a safe and orderly workplace; provide security escort for staff and patients as required; respond to requests for assistance from staff, patients and the public.

Participate in photo identification and security system programs through methods such as taking staff photos, card access information and entering database information.

Liaise with fire, police and other related community officials regarding fire and security protocol, response, incidents and investigations per department guidelines.

Provide First Aid services to injured persons, complete required documentation and maintain supplies.

Maintain a daily log of events and prepare detailed reports.
