Overview

JOB OPPORTUNITY:
Victim Support Worker, Sex Crimes Unit (SCU). Victim Support Worker, SCU (Competition #27-26). The Victim Support Worker works as part of a team with detectives co-located with police in the Sex Crimes Unit (SCU) of the Vancouver Police Department. The team provides follow-up on sexual assault cases reported to the Vancouver Police. Reporting to the Manager, Victim Services, the Victim Support Worker is responsible for providing support to clients who have experienced sexual violence and may or may not be involved in the justice system.

The role includes providing specialized services based on the nature of the victimization and the level of involvement with the criminal justice system, aiding in recovery, reducing the impact of crime and trauma, supporting clients through the justice process, assisting in safety planning, and helping survivors cope with the crimes committed against them.

Responsibilities
  • Provide victim-centered support to clients who have experienced sexual violence, including those involved with or navigating the justice system.
  • Assist in the recovery process by reducing trauma impact and supporting clients through the justice process.
  • Help create safety plans and support coping strategies for survivors.
  • Collaborate with SCU detectives and other service providers to coordinate follow-up and referral processes.

Work Details

Work Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday–Friday

Salary: Paygrade GS 11, Step 1, $33.01/hour (or higher based on experience)

Location: On-site at Vancouver Police Department (Graveley St)

Qualifications
  • B.S.W. or relevant B.A. from a recognized, accredited university
  • Minimum two years of experience supporting and advocating for people who have experienced sexual violence
  • Collaborative communication, teamwork, interpersonal communication, diversity and cultural agility
  • Personal effectiveness, integrity, ethical behaviour, resilience, adaptability/flexibility
  • Commitment to results-focused, client-centred service; proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Ability to maintain contact with and refer to other community service providers
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system, including court procedures and related services
  • Understanding of systems such as MCFD, Corrections, VAFSS, and police services
Role Qualifications and Skills
  • Manage relationships with the Sex Crimes unit, clients, and related systems
  • Ability to work independently and as part of the SCU and FSGV Victim Services team
  • Crisis intervention, risk assessment, and safety planning skills
  • Understanding of violence dynamics in intimate relationships, sexual assault, harassment, and abuse
  • Knowledge of community-based and feminist approaches to intervening in violence against women, with attention to intersectionality
  • Understanding of cross-cultural and equity issues
  • Strong knowledge of criminal justice and police processes, including bail and investigative procedures
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and victim assistance programs
  • Ability to work under pressure, balance stakeholder priorities, and maintain confidentiality
