About DEWC
The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) exists to support and empower women and children, living in extreme poverty in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, who are particularly vulnerable to violence, exploitation, injustice and injury. Through low barrier Drop‑In Centers and Emergency Shelters, DEWC provides basic need services, programs, and specialized supports to over 1,000 women and children daily to help them survive the conditions that surround them.

The Opportunity
The Cultural Programmer is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of cultural, recreational, social and/or educational programs that are consistent with the mission and mandate of the DEWC. Her responsibility will include working with DEWC members ensuring relevant programming that maximizes their decision making and participation. Reporting directly to the Manager of Programs, the Cultural Programmer will work in collaboration with other DEWC staff to promote integrated services to women.

She will work from a feminist perspective and within an anti‑oppression framework.

About You

At least 2 years of experience working with low‑income women in a women‑serving or inner‑city drop‑in environment

Ability to promote and articulate the mission, mandate, philosophy, and values of DEWC

Knowledge of the issues impacting women in the DTES, including gender‑based violence, mental health, homelessness, and addictions

Knowledge of and aptitude for social media platforms and IT proficiency

Experience in the development and facilitation of cultural, recreational, and arts groups and activities

Efficient organizational skills including record keeping, scheduling, and problem‑solving abilities

Have or will obtain First Aid & NVCI Certification

Position Details

Permanent – Full‑time, 9‑day fortnight schedule

Work schedule:

Week 1 – Sunday to Thursday (11:30 am – 8:00 pm);
Week 2 – Monday to Thursday (12:00 pm – 8:00 pm)

Union: BCGEU / Salary $30.22 /hr
