The Directions Youth Outreach program works to promote safer, healthier alternatives for youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The focus is to promote awareness of, and connect youth to, appropriate services and resources to reduce the harm in their lives. This position will consist of working with a variety of at-risk, homeless and street-entrenched youth under 25 (prioritizing youth 18 and under) struggling with addiction, intellectual, emotional and social challenges, mental health issues, concurrent issues and sexual exploitation.

This is a full-time term position (35hr/week) reporting to the Supervisor. Ability to work some evenings and weekends required to accommodate program and client needs.

Work Hours: 35 hrs/week, Monday-Friday 11 am-7 pm. Term position ending February 28, 2027 or upon return of incumbent

Salary: GS10S1, or $30.83/hr

Education, Training, Experience

• Two-year post-secondary course/diploma in a related human/social service field
• 1 year related experience with emphasis on homelessness, mental health, addictions, and/or social services
• Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Role Qualifications and Skills include, but are not limited to

• Knowledge of community, social and health resources; and systemic issues that affect low-income and marginalized people
• Knowledge of substance misuse, sexual exploitation, adolescent development and the problems encountered by chemically dependent individuals; basic understanding of behavioural management
• Knowledge of and belief in the Harm Reduction model
• Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, mediate, manage aggressive behavior, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques

Additional Requirements

• Successful completion of a criminal record check
• Valid class 5 BC driver’s license
• Current First Aid, Food Safe Level 1, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates are an asset

Directions Youth Services is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for more than 90 years has provided a variety of essential resources for children, families, and individuals in the Greater Vancouver community. We believe in the resiliency of Vancouver’s youth who are at-risk, homeless, and street-involved. We assist youth under the age of 25 to get counselling for trauma, mental health, or substance issues.

Our teams strive to create spaces and build connections with youth who are facing challenges of street life, substance use mental health concerns, and disconnection from their communities. Directions inclusive programs of shelter and drop-in, safe houses, and other unique programs are committed to being a community leader in harm reduction work and fostering low-barrier spaces where all youth are welcome.
