About the role
Intermediate Level Underwriter, Commercial Lines Property & Casualty — Vancouver or Victoria, BC. Permanent, full‑time position requiring a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.
What you'll do here:- Assess, evaluate, and negotiate moderate to complex risks.
- Apply effective pricing and underwriting strategies in accordance with company guidelines and personal underwriting authority limits.
- Within your level of authority, quote, negotiate, sell, and authorize the acceptance of moderate to complex new business, renewals, and endorsements to develop and retain profitable business according to the department’s business plan.
- Participate in broker visits, insurance industry functions, and marketing events to support broker relationship development.
- Arrange reinsurance when required.
- Answer inquiries, develop, and monitor business with brokers through visits, discussions, and correspondence.
- Use the computer system for policy inquiry, electronic filing, underwriting, and rating transactions.
- Make recommendations to improve the department and increase its efficiency.
- Foster cooperative broker relationships to identify and develop sales opportunities.
- Attend broker meetings at broker offices.
- Minimum 3–4 years of Commercial Lines underwriting experience in Property & Casualty.
- Completion of CIP designation (or progress towards it) is an asset.
- Strong track record of developing, mentoring, and coaching teammates.
- Ability to develop and maintain excellent relationships with brokers.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Strong negotiating skills and business savvy.
- Strong analytical and technical experience.
- Initiative and ability to work under pressure.
- Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office products and computer tools.
- Eligible to work in Canada;
Canadian work experience is not required.
Salary range (based on a 35‑hour workweek): $69,200 – $84,600. Annual bonus target based on base salary, with potential payout up to double the target (7.5% of base salary). Employee Share Purchase Plan with Intact matching 50% of net shares. Pension plan offering guaranteed income for life.
