Purpose:The General Counsel serves as the chief legal advisor to the organization, providing strategic guidance and oversight on all legal matters impacting the company and its senior living communities. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including those related to healthcare, employment, resident care, and risk management. The General Counsel plays a key role in contract development and review, dispute resolution, and protecting the company’s interests through proactive legal planning.
Additionally, this role partners with executive leadership to support ethical decision-making and safeguard the organization’s reputation and operational integrity.
- Serve as the primary legal advisor to executives and leadership on all matters impacting the organization, including operations, resident care, employment, and regulatory compliance.
- Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to senior living communities, including licensing, HIPAA, healthcare standards, contracts, and employment law.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and legal documents with vendors, partners, and external stakeholders.
- Lead and coordinate the company’s response to legal disputes, claims, and litigation, including management of outside counsel when necessary.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures that reduce organizational risk and support ethical and compliant operations.
- Monitor industry trends, legislative changes, and regulatory updates to proactively advise leadership on potential impacts.
- Provide guidance and training to leadership and staff on legal matters, including resident rights, privacy laws, employment practices, and documentation standards.
- Support mergers, acquisitions, and major strategic initiatives through due diligence, structuring, and legal oversight.
- Maintain strong relationships with regulators, external counsel, and business partners to ensure effective communication and resolution of issues.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in the United States.
- Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive legal experience, preferably with exposure to healthcare, senior living, long-term care, or similar regulated industries.
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state regulations governing healthcare, employment law, contracts, and privacy (e.g., HIPAA).
- Proven experience drafting and negotiating contracts, managing legal disputes, and advising executive leadership.
- Strong analytical, communication, and decision-making skills with the ability to balance legal risk and operational priorities.
- Ability to travel occasionally to communities and corporate offices as required.
