About This Role

Travel Position:
Robinson Brothers Construction, LLC is seeking a skilled Horizontal Directional Driller to join our Traveling crew. Our contracts span the Pacific Northwest and the West Coast, encompassing the western states. We are looking for talented individuals who are enthusiastic and ready to travel to various job sites. Travel is required and expected as part of this field position.

Job Summary

A Successful Directional Drill Locator/Operator is specially trained and has expertise in locating for horizontal/directional drill rigs and product support equipment. The individual will be primarily responsible for the setup and completion of drilling variable‑sized underground boreholes and pulling back the required conduit/pipe. As an operator, you will run a variety of directional drilling equipment such as Directional Drill (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch), Vac.

Truck, Mud Truck, Excavator, Forklift, Dump truck, Locator, and others.

Responsibilities
  • Locate for Directional Drill for installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable.
  • Ensure the safety of the public and other utilities underground facilities.
  • Operate Directional Drill.
  • Assist in potholing and remediation.
  • Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie‑ins.
  • Read and comprehend utility locates.
  • Set up equipment including drills, water tanks, and ground the machine.
  • Formulate and mix drilling mud for site conditions.
  • Perform proper reaming and pull‑back methods for existing conditions.
  • Oversee laborer and/or crew members’ work and monitor time usage.
  • Communicate with the Supervisor daily to turn in required reports (e.g., Bore logs, vehicle maintenance reports, crew time logs).
  • Follow job specifications and company policies.
  • Comply with safety procedures on and off the project site.
  • Strive for optimal production while working safely and performing quality work.
  • Travel is a must.
Qualifications
  • Possess a valid driver’s license or be willing to obtain the required license.
  • Good driving record required.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to operate various types of utility trucks and equipment safely.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and equipment safely.
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees, etc.
  • Willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Able to lift or carry 50 lbs regularly.
  • Travel required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous construction experience, preferably in the telecommunications industry.
  • Knowledge of established Horizontal/Directional Drill Locator/Operator procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to perform Horizontal/Directional Drill Locator/Operator procedures and duties.
Work Environment

This full‑time hourly position involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions—including extreme cold, rain, sleet, snow, humidity, high temperatures, and high wind. The environment may include exposure to natural gas, electrical shock, and moderate to loud noise levels.

Physical Requirements

Stand for long periods (up to 12 hours), tolerate extreme weather, speak and hear safety instructions, lift 75 lbs, and possess vision capabilities such as close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
