As a Utilities Field Inspector, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the safe, high‑quality installation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of critical utilities infrastructure. From supporting construction oversight to ensuring compliance with project specifications, your work directly strengthens the communities where Canadians live, work, and thrive. This position offers opportunity of exposure toa wide variety of exciting and unique projects across the company, supporting the engineering staff (e.g., T&D, Utilities, EV Charging Infrastructure, Power Generation, Renewables, Hydro & Dams, Energy storage, Magnitude Underground Tunnelling, etc.)
Projects are typically within the Toronto area and some in the Horseshoe area. This position can be available on a fulltime permanent or part-time basis.
Your Impact
- Review IFC package prior to construction start.
- Participate in pre‑construction and post‑construction/lessons learned meetings.
- Complete Field Risk Assessment & Hazard Evaluation, Review Contractor’s Safety procedures, complete contractor’s site orientation.
- Complete random daily field inspections for the projects assigned. Prepare daily log with record of activities, verification of measures, markup drawings, and related construction photos.
- Verify all construction work and workmanship complies with standards and specifications in conjunction with project construction drawings and in accordance with O. Reg. 22/04.
- Audit the safe work practices for construction work being performed by the contractors to ensure adherence to Construction Standards, Electrical Utility Safety Rules, and OH&S Act and Regulations, all applicable laws, and guidelines (e.g., MTO Book 7, MCR etc.).
- Issue Safety Non‑Compliance Reports if required. Monitor contractor’s corrective actions for violations of safety practices, plans and procedures or regulatory requirements.
- Issue Quality Non‑Compliance Reports if required. Monitor contractor’s corrective actions for deficiencies or non‑adherence to design and standards.
- Participate in accident/incident reporting process as necessary.
- Record and verify daily progress on construction documents, clearly noting any deviations from the original design due to unexpected site conditions, scope modifications, design shortcomings, or other factors.
- Verify Contractor’s monthly Billing, Change Orders, and quantities of installed materials as per BOM.
- Provide on‑demand project status update.
- Perform final walk down to ensure scope of work completed and ready for intended service, prepare list of deficiencies, warranty holdback release.
- Review As‑built package and prepare Project Finalization Report for project close out.
- Validate and accept As‑Built electrical drawings prepared and signed by a competent Contractor representative as per the Construction Verification Program, ESA O. Reg 22/04, and CSA Standard S250-11.
The Skills That Set You Apart
- Power Line Technician, or Underground Equivalent, Electrical Technician, or Engineering designation.
- Utility and infrastructure experience.
- Working knowledge of the Electrical Utility Safety Rules and industry safe work practices.
- Knowledge of Toronto Hydro Rule Book, THESL Distribution Standards, and Book 7 would be an asset.
- Familiar working knowledge with occupational health & safety act (OHSA), construction standards and specifications in Ontario and City of Toronto (OPS, MCR) and ACI & AISC codes is an asset.
- Must have valid Ontario Drivers’ License.
- Must be able to work outside in extreme weather and flexible on hours of work.
