How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:
The Assistant Environmental Technician is responsible for project support, inclusive of project coordination support, on ecological restoration and ecosystem management projects. This position helps support the planning for restoration, public land, and private land tree planting teams with GIS mapping, project site visits and data collection, project applications, planting file organization, and some project implementation field work.
Major Responsibilities:
- Assists with the coordination of ecological restoration planting, private land planting, and forestry management projects and programs including development of restoration plans, planting plans, invasive species management plans, and forestry management plans
- Assists with the coordination of tree & shrub planting site assessments and preparation of technical reports in support of project communications and deliverables
- Provides technical support in the planning, GIS map development and development of planting and other restoration projects
- Participates in daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning when on site as required
- Provides administrative support on project start up, development, and close out
- Obtains locates, permits, and internal and external approvals as required
- Prepares and provides status updates, project status and other relevant reports to the project team as well as relevant project stakeholders
- Responsible for file management of documents and records (in both paper and electronic file formats)
- Incumbents may also be assigned other duties
What will you need to succeed:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)
- College diploma in Environmental Sciences, Geomatics, Restoration Ecology or a related field
Experience
- 1+ years of experience related to major tasks
Knowledge/Skill/Ability – Competencies
- Proficiency and understanding of ArcGIS and other mapping software for the purposes of map development
- Able to comprehend documentation that is technical or scientific in nature, skilled in writing technical reports or manuals
- Able to self-manage workload and prioritize tasks as an ongoing challenge in a frequently fluctuating workload and multiple deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to proactively identify problems in a timely manner, seeking the appropriate level of support to solve issues
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, related Regulations and legislation
- Proficiency in MS Office suite including online software such as MS teams, Web Ex, and SharePoint; advanced MS Excel capabilities for analysis, data visualization
