About Combat Waffle Studios
Combat Waffle Studios is a veteran-owned game development studio redefining what’s possible in VR. After the success of Ghosts of Tabor, we’re scaling up for our next major standalone VR release set to launch in the near future. This project remains under wraps, but we promise it’s ambitious, intense, and pushing boundaries in immersion and player-driven experience.
Position OverviewWe’re looking for a Senior Gameplay Designer to help shape the core systems, mechanics, and player experience of our unannounced standalone VR title. In this role, you’ll be responsible for designing and refining the combat, progression, and moment-to-moment gameplay that defines the heart of our experience. You’ll collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to ensure gameplay is polished, engaging, and unforgettable in VR.
Key Responsibilities- Design, document, and iterate on core gameplay systems (combat, progression, abilities, AI behaviors, etc.).
- Prototype new mechanics quickly and refine them through play testing and feedback.
- Partner with engineering and art teams to ensure designs are technically feasible and immersive in VR.
- Balance systems for fairness, challenge, and long-term engagement.
- Produce clear, detailed design documentation and effectively communicate vision across teams.
- Mentor junior designers and foster a collaborative, creative culture.
- Stay ahead of industry trends, competitive titles, and emerging gameplay innovations.
- 5+ years of professional experience in gameplay design, with at least one shipped title in a senior or lead role.
- Deep understanding of game systems, mechanics, pacing, and player psychology.
- Strong proficiency with Unreal Engine.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Proven ability to balance creativity with technical and production constraints.
- A strong portfolio of shipped titles demonstrating gameplay design contributions.
- Experience designing multiplayer, live-service, or VR titles.
- Knowledge of scripting languages (Blueprints, C++).
- Strong analytical skills for tuning balance with both qualitative and quantitative data.
- Passion for first-person immersive shooters.
- Help define the core gameplay of an ambitious, standalone VR title.
