Role Overview

Casella Construction is seeking a Construction Site Field Engineer to support our Heavy Civil Construction team. This hybrid role combines technical field engineering responsibilities with hands‑on laborer duties. The ideal candidate will be proficient in survey layout, GPS systems, and interpreting construction plans, while also being capable of performing physical labor and operating equipment as needed to support project execution.

Responsibilities
  • Operate support equipment such as skid steers, mini rollers, and haul trucks.
  • Perform physical labor including spreading gravel/asphalt, installing water/sewer lines, and site cleanup.
  • Guide and assist other laborers on tasks and equipment usage.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
  • Complete daily paperwork and assist with jobsite documentation.
  • Participate in snow removal operations during winter months using plows, spreaders, and blowers.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical drawings.
  • Collaborate with superintendents, supervisors, and foremen to coordinate project layout and sequencing.
  • Perform detailed jobsite layout including benchmarks, control points, and quality control checks.
  • Manage and troubleshoot GPS and Total Station equipment for layout and data collection.
  • Support GPS‑guided equipment (excavators, bulldozers) including setup, calibration, and maintenance.
  • Collect and organize as‑built data and assist with project documentation.
  • Monitor work progress to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety standards.
  • Assist with developing linework and surfaces to support survey and construction activities.
  • Provide technical support to field crews and ensure layout accuracy throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Training requirements, both in person and online, as needed or required.
Winter Maintenance Responsibilities
  • Requires the ability to plow snow during the winter months across various locations in the state of Vermont and New Hampshire.
  • Must be able to operate snow removal equipment such as snowplows, salt spreaders, and snow blowers.>
  • Must be proficient in handling both light and heavy‑duty vehicles equipped for snow removal, ensuring safe and clear passage on roads and pathways.
  • Must be able to work in cold weather conditions and perform physical labor as needed.
Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • 1‑3 years of experience in civil construction, with a strong background in field engineering or laborer duties.
  • Proficient in reading plans and using GPS/Total Station equipment.
  • Ability to remain flexible as assignments change.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Familiarity with GPS‑guided equipment is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work weekends, nights, and travel as needed.
  • Ability to participate in regulatory trainings (OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, Flagging, Spotter).
  • HAZWOPER 40 hr certification preferred.
  • Knowledge in general civil construction is preferred.
  • Training requirements, both in person and online, as needed or required.
Physical Requirements
  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand‑eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and climb inclines for the duration of the shift.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather.
