Overview

Associate or Full Professor and Director, Maverick Lloyd School for the Environment (MLSE) at Vermont Law and Graduate School. The school trains students to address environmental challenges with a focus on climate change, biodiversity, environmental justice, sustainable practices, and related policy. The role offers tenure subject to Board approval and includes leadership of the MLSE within the Vermont Law and Graduate School community.

Position Summary

The Vermont Law and Graduate School invites applications for the position of Associate Dean of Environmental Programs and Director of the Maverick Lloyd School for the Environment. The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with a track record in higher education, research excellence, and fundraising. Tenure is anticipated subject to Board approval.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership:
    Develop and implement a forward-looking strategic vision for the MLSE, aligning with school goals and addressing environmental challenges including climate crisis, biodiversity loss, environmental injustice, and sustainability.
  • Research Excellence:
    Foster a vibrant research environment in climate science, food and agriculture, energy, environmental justice, animal protection, and related areas; encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and support faculty and student research.
  • Fundraising and Development:
    Lead external funding efforts; cultivate relationships with donors, alumni, and stakeholders to support financial and strategic goals.
  • Academic Administration:
    Oversee academic programs, curriculum, and staff; provide leadership in faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation.
  • Policy and Advocacy:
    Position the school as a thought leader in environmental and climate policy; engage policymakers and the public to influence policy and promote sustainable practices.
  • Community Engagement:
    Strengthen partnerships with local, national, and international organizations; promote outreach and service aligned with the mission.
  • Future Planning:
    Drive the school’s vision forward; develop innovative programs to address emerging issues.
  • Collaboration:

    Work with the Director of the Environmental Law Center to develop interdisciplinary programs and initiatives.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Education:

    An advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in environmental science, climate science, environmental studies, environmental justice, environmental policy, food and agriculture, energy systems, public policy, political science, public administration, or related field.
  • Experience:

    Demonstrated leadership in higher education (e.g., department chair, associate dean, or equivalent) with success in securing research funding and managing large-scale projects.
  • Research Track Record:
    Strong publications, grants, and contributions in environmental sustainability fields; expertise in climate change, pollution, environmental justice, food and agriculture, or energy is desirable.
  • Strategic Vision:
    Ability to develop and execute plans advancing the school’s mission and addressing global environmental challenges.
  • Leadership

    Skills:

    Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to lead a diverse team.
  • Fundraising Acumen:
    Proven ability to raise funds from government, industry, foundations, and donors.
  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:
    Demonstrated commitment in academic and professional settings.
