Overview

RNESU is accepting applications for Special Education Paraeducators for the upcoming  school year. The Para educator position is for the safety and development of the student within the educational setting. The Para educator will be responsible for supporting the student within the classroom or community setting. They must ensure the development and safety of these students in accordance with relevant federal and municipal legislation and policies.

The Para educator will be respectful of the students and their parents, and should help to keep the facilities safe and well maintained. The primary task of the SPED Para educator is to give one-on-one assistance to assigned individual student(s) in carrying out Individual Education Plans. These students have physical, cognitive, mental and/or other disabilities which require continuous or virtually continuous supervision and assistance and/or provide successful and rewarding educational experiences to children who are at-risk.

Following the instructional directions of the special educator, the para educator is to provide individual and/or small-group instruction and such other appropriate strategies as necessary to achieve Individual Educational goals. Paraeducators are expected to support students in a dignified and respectful manner. Verbal and physical responses to students need to be polite, courteous and morale enhancing. Trauma-informed communication and practices are utilized.

It is extremely important to follow confidentiality and need to know guidelines both at work and in the community. The case manager is the first line of communication and needs to be kept abreast of the student’s progress and any issues that arise in supporting the student. The para educator can be moving from classroom to classroom supporting student(s) to be successful throughout each day.

Understanding accommodations and classroom expectations is extremely important in providing student support. Communication with the special educator or classroom teacher is imperative and all interaction with staff, faculty and students need to be respectful and dignified. Due to the nature of this job many interactions with a variety of students, staff and faculty will occur on a daily basis. Qualifications

The following qualifications are required:

  • Will accept High School Diploma, meet the standard of being Highly Qualified under Title 1 requirements and pass the Para educator Assessment Modules through Master Teacher within the first year of employment.
  • Associates degree or equivalent preferred.

Our school district is centrally located in western Vermont. We are between Rutland, the third largest city in VT, and the college town of Middlebury. Our lakes and mountains attract many outdoor activities. The smallest of our six elementary schools has 31 children (K-6), and the largest has 400 children. Our 7-12 grade high school has an enrollment of 750 students and offers a wide variety of courses for both career and college-bound students.
