ASSISTANT RURAL CARRIER (ARC)
Job OverviewUsing dynamic route descriptions, delivers packages on Sundays and observed holidays, and may deliver, collect mail and packages on Saturday along a prescribed rural route using a vehicle.
Scheduled days are Saturday, Sunday and holidays observed by the USPS on an as needed basis. During the onboarding period, ARCs must be available for required training on weekdays. Hours vary.
Driving required:
Applicants should have a valid state driver’s license, a safe driving record and at least two years of unsupervised experience driving passenger cars or larger in the U.S. or its possessions or territories or in U.S. military installations worldwide. A personal vehicle suitable for use may be required.
$20.38 per hour, paid bi‑weekly.
Responsibilities- Loads packages and mail in delivery sequence in vehicle.
- Delivers packages to customers along a prescribed route.
- Sorts mail for the assigned route.
- Receives and signs for accountable mail.
- Delivers mail and packages to customers, collects monies and receipts for accountable mail, and picks up mail from customers’ roadside boxes.
- Furnishes routine information concerning postal matters to customers.
- Returns collected, undeliverable mail, and submits monies and receipts to post office.
- Prepares appropriate time records.
- Provides for mail security at all times.
- Valid state driver’s license.
- Safe driving record.
- At least two years of unsupervised driving experience with passenger cars or larger vehicles in the United States or its territories.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and move trays or containers of mail and parcels weighing up to 70 pounds.
- Willingness to provide a suitable personal vehicle if not assigned one by USPS.
- Live within easy commuting distance of the facility location.
Postal Service employment is conditional upon meeting medical suitability, general eligibility and background check requirements. ARCs are non‑career employees who may receive an Equipment Maintenance Allowance (EMA) if they provide their own vehicle.
Additionally, ARCs provide customers along a rural route services which includes delivering and collecting mail.
