Position Summary

Senior Engineer, Sustaining – Vernon Hills, IL

Location: Vernon Hills, IL

Travel Requirement: Up to 20% domestic, based on project needs

The Senior Engineer, Sustaining leads and executes engineering assignments that deliver innovative, functional, and cost‑effective solutions to support product development and commercialization. The role ensures products are designed for manufacturability and that scalable, robust processes are in place for production. The engineer supports existing BD products and product families through lifecycle management, adherence to quality systems, design controls, and sound engineering practices.

• Drive product lifecycle management by resolving technical issues, implementing design enhancements, and managing product updates and process changes for cost savings.
• Lead process transfers and vertical integration efforts across internal BD sites and external suppliers, serving as the technical liaison.
• Ensure compliance with BD’s Quality System through rigorous verification of engineering work products.
• Apply engineering principles (DFMEA, PFMEA, DFM, materials science, process reliability) to meet product design and manufacturing requirements.
• Collaborate with R&D, Marketing, Quality, and Manufacturing to identify and implement product and process improvements.
• Conduct detailed design and process analysis; review and approve component and equipment specifications.
• Evaluate new manufacturing processes and technologies for integration into existing operations.
• Coordinate commercialization of new products and processes with global manufacturing sites.
• Develop and manage project plans, budgets, contingency strategies, and resource estimates.
• Provide technical leadership in sustaining engineering, cost reduction, and design transfer initiatives.
• Integrate complex subsystem designs into scalable manufacturing processes.

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Biomechanical Engineering. MS preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of product and process engineering experience within the medical device or pharmaceutical industry.
• Proven experience in project management, design for manufacturing, and technical leadership.
• Experience with statistical analysis, technical documentation, and process validation.
• Familiarity with ISO standards, GMP, and regulatory compliance.
