Eligibility requirements must be completed and listed on the application. Documentation of eligibility will be required at a later date.
Other Requirements- Applicants must be of good character.
- Applicants with a criminal record, dishonorable discharge from any police or fire department, or from the Armed Forces of the United States are ineligible.
- Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and write in English without difficulty, make clear written reports, and deal tactfully with the public.
- Permanent residence within a reasonable distance of Town of Vernon as specified by the Chief of Police and Town Administrator.
- Weight in proportion to height; full physical fitness; normal color vision (20/20 correctable) and normal hearing; non-smoker.
- Valid driver's license.
- Upon conditional offer, physical, psychological, and polygraph examinations required.
Applicants must obtain a Complete Health & Injury Prevention Inc. (CHIP) card showing successful completion of the Connecticut POST physical ability assessment.
Essential Functions of the Position- Patrol on foot or in car in assigned area to prevent and detect violations.
- Maintain order and protect life and property.
- Makes arrests and facilitates arrest procedures.
- Testifies in court as required.
- Investigates accidents and offenses and may conduct detective investigations when assigned.
- Logs accurate reports and records; directs traffic and operates traffic signals.
- Operates under supervision of Sergeant or superior officer.
- Performs related duties as required.
- CHIP test: must have valid CHIP card by closing date.
- Written test: pass Connecticut Police Chief Written test with 70% or greater.
- Oral interview: may be invited after written test score ≥80% (as per department needs).
