Competencies- Must be able to proficiently read, speak, and write in English.
- Must be in good physical condition to quickly move up and down stairs, run to respond to urgent situations, stand for long periods, and walk long rounds.
- Must be capable of taking swift and efficient action, forcibly detaining, restraining, and/or extracting persons from the premises when responding to emergency codes or other urgent situations.
- Must be alert and have excellent observation skills.
- Must have good communication and analytical skills and the ability to exercise independent judgement in emergency situations.
- Must possess a working knowledge of applicable state laws, especially those dealing with use of force and detention powers.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of the hospital floor plan, including all the normal and emergency entry and exit points.
- Must have knowledge about hospital and departmental policies and procedures and be able to enforce said policies and procedures.

- Acts as first responder, immediately responding to all emergency codes and uses established procedure once on-scene.
- Follows proper CPI and de‑escalation training and follows clinical direction when detaining or restraining a patient or unruly visitor.
- Ensures emergency teams have unobstructed routes and works with local EMS services (Fire, Police, Ambulance) when needed.
- Acts as a liaison between the hospital and law enforcement agency.
- Places miscreants under citizen’s arrest until they can be handed over to law enforcement officials.
- Safeguards against vandalism, theft, fire and injury to employees, patients, and visitors.
- Patrols external and internal areas of the hospital, parking areas, and grounds and assists in monitoring the safety of entrances and exits.
- Maintains a security presence throughout the hospital, utilizing CCTV, access control equipment, and physical patrols to monitor egress and ingress of personnel and to restrict unauthorized access.
- Identifies and responds to suspicious activity.
- Provides guidance and assistance to patients and visitors after normal hospital working hours, including verbal direction and escorts when needed.
- Conducts regular testing of alarms, including fire alarm drills, monitors employee response, documents problems and provides reports with recommendations to the Safety Committee.
- Responds to all alarm activations and investigates causes.
- Inspects hospital for fire or environmental hazards, ensuring that security arrangements like computers, alarm systems, and CCTV are functioning properly.
- Responsible for collecting lost and found items and documenting owner information.
- Collects patient valuables and secures them in the property room safe until called for.
- Investigates theft or vandalism reports, documents incidents, and forwards reports to the Security Sergeant or Lead; summons local police when warranted.
- Responds to morgue duty calls and applies proper lifting techniques for transport of deceased patients.
- Enforces parking regulations, assists with valet parking, issues warning tickets, and can escort or drive vehicles as needed.
- Operates badge making equipment, CCTV, access consoles, and two‑way radios.
- Documents daily activity reports, investigations, and irregularities.
- Assists Engineering with facility needs and contacts the Engineering call‑out manager when necessary.
- Performs other duties as requested by supervisors.
- High school graduate (diploma or GED equivalency).
- Valid driver’s license; maintain a clean driving record and complete the safe driving educational program upon hire and annually thereafter.
- Current Connecticut Security Officer Identification Card or obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Obtain CPI conflict resolution training within 6 months of hire.
- Minimum of two (2) years of previous security or security‑related experience, such as law enforcement or military service.
