Job Description:
The Psychiatric Advanced Practice RN works under the supervision of a medical director, providing highly advanced psychiatric care. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, and delivering comprehensive psychiatric patient care, prescribing medication, interpreting lab and diagnostic results, leading recovery team meetings, and participating in quality improvement initiatives.
- Attend work on a regular basis, potentially following a rotating or extended shift schedule.
- Operate within licensure scope to promote a therapeutic and safe psychiatric environment.
- Provide acute and long‑term psychiatric care with daily mental health assessments.
- Evaluate patients, diagnose psychiatric conditions, develop care plans, and document appropriately.
- Prescribe medications, order laboratory and diagnostic testing, make referrals, and interpret results.
- Conduct face‑to‑face assessments for patients with acute and long‑term psychiatric diagnoses.
- Lead Recovery Team Meetings, participate in court hearings, and serve as liaison to courts.
- Perform periodic reviews of hospitalized patients and evaluate changes in status.
- Oversee diagnosis review, assess risks, and coordinate necessary support services.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including annual summaries and compliance with policies.
- Participate in hospital‑wide quality and performance improvement programs.
- Engage in Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) activities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Medical Director, including supervisory responsibilities.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of psychiatric nursing methods, laws, and hospital operations.
- Knowledge of medical/psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment procedures.
- Knowledge of case history development, implementation, and documentation.
- Skills interpreting laboratory results.
- Skills using medical diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment.
- Ability to examine, diagnose, and treat psychiatric disorders.
- Ability to supervise others providing psychiatric care and medical support.
- Ability to interact appropriately with individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Ability to communicate ideas clearly in written and oral form.
- Ability to prepare and maintain medical records.
- Ability to work productively with interdisciplinary team members.
- Ability to work independently and adapt to varying responsibilities.
- Registered and certified as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Texas Board of Nursing or a state with reciprocity under the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- APR specialization certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or other recognized agency.
- Current DEA registration certificate.
- National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- Graduation from an accredited advanced practice RN program with a master’s degree or higher.
- At least 24 months of clinical nursing experience.
- Preferred one year as an Advanced Practice RN.
- One year of experience supervising or leading others.
