Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) seeks a dedicated Psychiatric Advanced Practice RN to provide specialized care at our state‑operated psychiatric hospitals.
In this senior‑level role, you will assess, plan, and provide comprehensive psychiatric patient care independently or collaboratively, supervise APRNs and other health‑care professionals, lead recovery teams, and provide quality improvement leadership.
Essential Job Functions- Attend work on a regular basis and, when required, follow a specific shift schedule, rotating schedule, extended shift, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
- Operate within the scope of licensure to promote and maintain a therapeutic and safe psychiatric milieu.
- Provide acute and long‑term psychiatric care, daily assessments, diagnosis, treatment, and documentation of care plans.
- Prescribe medications, order laboratory and diagnostic testing, interpret results, and make referrals.
- Conduct face‑to‑face assessments for individuals with acute and long‑term psychiatric diagnoses; review and update treatment plans as warranted.
- Lead Recovery Team Meetings, participate in court hearings, and serve as liaison to the courts.
- Conduct periodic reviews of hospitalized patients, including on‑call evaluations of status changes.
- Review recovery plans, identify risks, and coordinate support services such as OT, PT, and nursing.
- Maintain accurate documentation, monitor compliance with policies, and participate in revenue enhancement activities.
- Participate in hospital‑wide quality assessment, performance improvement, and OPPE activities.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the Medical Director, including supervising others and representing the Medical Director in their absence.
- Engage in disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as required.
- Knowledge of psychiatric nursing methods, laws, and hospital operations.
- Knowledge of medical/psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment principles.
- Knowledge of developing and documenting case histories and care plans.
- Skills interpreting laboratory results.
- Skills in caring for patients using diagnostic and treatment tools.
- Ability to examine, diagnose, and treat psychiatric disorders.
- Ability to supervise psychiatric care staff.
- Ability to interact appropriately with individuals with developmental disabilities.

- Registered and certified as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Texas Board of Nursing or another state with reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

- Graduation from an accredited advanced practice RN educational program with a master’s degree or higher.
