Overview

This is a skilled position working independently under the general direction of the immediate supervisor and performs work ensuring proper and effective utilization of landfill facilities. This position is responsible for operating the weigh scales, scale computers and software programs, data entry, cashier duties, and record-keeping for Scalehouse operations.

  • Direct vehicles entering and leaving the facility
  • Assign and collect tipping fees from the established rate schedule
  • Balance cash receipts with daily drawer
  • Perform visual inspection duties of incoming loads when required
Education and Experience

High school diploma/G.E.D. and (1) one year of related working experience or equivalent.

One (1) year of computer and/or account keeping experience is preferred including computer applications, processing cash and credit transactions, filing and reception experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, ability, and skills.

Previous Scalehouse experience highly desired.

A positive attitude and a friendly personality who likes working with people is essential.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Knowledge of rules, policies, and procedures pertaining to the operation of the landfill operations, and the ability to enforce these rules and regulations tactfully yet firmly.

Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.

Ability to read, write, and make calculations with reasonable speed and accuracy.

Ability to operate Mettler Toledo Scale computer, cash register, credit card machine and calculator, base radio, hand‑held radio, and fax/copy machine.

Ability to use Waste Works or equivalent software, maintain simple records and handle money and receipts and make verbal/written reports.

Ability to sort and process weight tickets for each day’s receipts before they are turned in to the office.

Ability to complete daily scale/receipt reports; maintain logs and other reports, as assigned.

Ability to answer Scalehouse office telephones; respond to public's questions regarding prices, acceptable waste, hours of operation, and directions to the facility.

Ability to work varying schedules based on manpower demand.

Ability to attend work on a continuous and regular basis.

Ability to maintain a clean and orderly work area and perform other duties as assigned.

The position requires working 40 hours per week based on a schedule to have coverage for the hours and days that the Scalehouse is open, which includes weekends and holidays. The Scalehouse operates seven days per week from 6:45 am to 5:15 pm. The landfill is closed five days a year.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

This position works at an active Class 1 Landfill where materials that are generated for disposal and/or recycling are delivered daily. The Scalehouse is the primary entry and exit point for the facility.
