The Plant Mechanic performs mechanical work of a skilled nature in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water production and reclamation plant equipment and machinery. Maintains logs and records of preventive maintenance and repair work performed, and of supplies and materials requisitioned and consumed. This position performs tasks common to the classification while exhibiting initiative, discretion, and independent judgment within established guidelines to achieve the continued operational success of the plants.

Direct supervision is received from the Plant Supervisor.

  • Inspect, maintain, repair, and service water or reclamation plant machinery and equipment, including pumps, valves, valve actuators, motors, engines, meters, variable frequency drives, tanks, reservoirs, compressors, chemical feed and storage systems, electrical components, and other equipment typical to a water production or reclamation facility.
  • Install and rebuild pumps, motors, piping systems, and equipment related to the water production or reclamation process.
  • Pack, lubricate, clean, and paint mechanical equipment and motors.
  • Inspect newly installed mechanical equipment or related components to ensure safe and satisfactory operation and functionality.
  • Perform preventive maintenance checks and servicing on equipment.
  • Works closely with Water Production / Reclamation Facility Supervisor to determine upcoming maintenance tasks, projects, and concerns.
  • Works closely with Facility Operators to ensure maintenance and repair needs are met.
  • Assists in the installation and startup of new equipment.
  • Ensures trucks, tools, and equipment are kept clean and ready for use, and the truck is stocked with items needed to perform daily assignments.
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays if needed.
  • Once properly trained and equipped, will be required to work with or around hazardous chemicals utilized in the water production and reclamation processes.
  • Will be required to participate in an on‑call rotation for response to after‑hour calls.
  • Maintains detailed records in the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) system of all repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Works with vendors, facility staff, Water Production/Reclamation Plant Supervisors, Water Production Superintendent, and Wastewater Treatment Superintendent in the process of procuring new equipment and refurbishment of current equipment.
  • May be required to operate heavy machinery.
  • May be required to perform duties related to the harvesting of algae at the Concentrate Disposal Facility.
  • May be required to complete minor fabrication work, operate welding, cutting, and general fabrication equipment.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in general mechanical work.
  • 5 years or more of experience in the maintenance of pumps, motors, and other plant equipment is preferred.
  • 5 years or more of fabrication, cutting, and welding experience is preferred.
  • Must have dependable safety and work record.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations
  • Must possess a valid Florida Class "A" Commercial Driver's License.
  • Wastewater Collections or Distribution licenses are not required but are preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
  • Skill to read and follow the procedures outlined in the operation and maintenance manuals for diagnosing various equipment problems.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in constructing, maintaining, and repairing water production and reclamation facilities.
  • Skill to initiate and communicate with equipment manufacturers to resolve any equipment‑related problems.
  • Skill to read and interpret plant equipment and piping installation drawings.
  • Ability to efficiently handle emergencies and multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Will be required to work in adverse weather conditions to restore water production/reclamation equipment during emergencies.
  • May require announced or unannounced overtime work, and the ability to respond to call‑out during non‑working hours or emergencies.
