Recreation Coordinator - Volunteer and Community Engagement

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation. The Recreation Coordinator performs advanced and responsible administrative work planning, coordinating, implementing, and directing all varieties and aspects of the County’s athletic programs and sports activities. Work involves administering organized league sports and programs, recruitment, training, and coordination of coaches, officials, scorers, timers, etc. Supervision will be exercised over subordinate personnel, including full-time, part-time, seasonal, and volunteer staff.

Participates and completes various related work as assigned including facility and venue coordination, scheduling, and staffing. In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.

  • Presents and facilitates recreational programming within the Recreation Division. Coordinates programs and activities with other County divisions and within the Parks, Recreation, and Conservation Department.
  • Plans and implements assigned athletic programs and leagues. Maintains appropriate program registration records, tallies program attendance for reports, and performs post-program evaluations.
  • Makes recommendations on athletic program improvements and delivery of athletic services.
  • Assists the Department’s Assistant Director with division budget development and management.
  • Assists in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and staff training for program areas.
  • Assists with Recruitment and retention of officials for program offerings.
  • Opens and closes park/facilities according to schedule. Required to report to work at the appointed hour, as scheduled, and work the entire assigned schedule.
  • Organizes, promotes, and conducts diversified recreation activities including athletic programming, special events, games, tournaments, camps, athletic leagues, etc.
  • Reviews and responds to customer concerns. Resolves conflicts regarding county programs and facility usage.
  • Provides program information to the public through the preparation and distribution of marketing materials.
  • Assists in the supervision of paid umpires, referees, and volunteers.
  • Assists in evaluating all programs for effectiveness and value to the overall recreation program.
  • Ensures participant and staff adherence to all safety practices and codes of conduct.
  • Provides excellent customer service to guests and participants, answering questions and acting as a liaison throughout the Department.
  • Maintains accurate records of activities and attendance.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of equipment and supplies. Inspects facilities and equipment for repairs or replacement.
  • Acts as a Sports Official and supports order at games and contests.
  • Coordinates facility use with community agencies, organizations, and the public as appropriate. Assists with the scheduling of assigned facilities.
  • Serves as a liaison and resource for community agencies and other organizations. Performs community outreach to promote recreation programs and stimulate interest in Division offerings.
  • Maintains rosters, registration forms, and enforces established league rules and bylaws.
  • Provide first aid when necessary.
  • Uses computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software in the performance of work assignments.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Education/

Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in parks and recreation, sports management, physical education, leisure services, or related discipline; minimum two years (2) experience in planning and directing community recreation activities. Excellent communication and public relations skills along with demonstrated competence in computer usage. Strong desire to excel in the public park setting with strong organizational skills in planning and execution of programs and activities desired.
