Law Enforcement Officer

Basic Function

Perform a variety of law enforcement activities for an assigned school district, including enforcing state statutes, protecting life and property, suppressing criminal activity, apprehending offenders, regulating non-criminal conduct, preserving public peace, enforcing traffic and parking regulations, and conducting investigations.

Representative Duties

  • Perform law enforcement activities, exercise authority within statutory obligations, and comply with lawful orders.
  • Prepare accurate reports of crimes, accidents, and incidents.
  • Maintain equipment in proper condition.
  • Assist other law enforcement officers as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Assist injured persons and determine appropriate actions promptly.
  • Conduct parent conferences regarding student violations as needed.
  • Refer incidents outside the officer’s jurisdiction appropriately.
  • Communicate with community members, staff, parents, and students.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Elements and application of state statutes.
  • District facilities, personnel, and community members.
  • Applicable laws and regulations.
  • Interpersonal skills including tact, patience, and courtesy.

Ability to:

  • Perform law enforcement duties within an assigned district.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate reports.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Determine appropriate actions within guidelines.
  • Interpret and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Education and Experience

High school diploma, G.E.D., or progress toward G.E.D., supplemented by law enforcement coursework.

Licenses and Requirements

  • Valid Kentucky driver’s license.
