Seasonal Equine Barn and Recovery Technician
Bluegrass Equine Surgery (BES) is an equine veterinary practice providing exceptional client service and primary medical care in the central Kentucky region. We are building a new, diverse, supportive, and driven team.
Hours: Seasonal, 40 hours/week (Tuesday‑Friday, 7:00‑5:00 AM or 9:00‑7:00 PM)
Season: Mid January‑July 2026
Reports to: Surgery Ops Manager, Hospital Manager
Department: Surgery
Location: Hospital and field
Compensation: Hourly
- Assist in appointments or drop-offs
- Admit and discharge patients
- Monitor hospitalized and surgical patients
- Monitor post‑operative medications and bandaging
- Communicate with Surgery Ops Manager, Hospital Manager, and doctors
- Restrain patients as needed
- Take vital measurements on patients
- Assist in dropping/recovering horses from anesthesia
- Load and unload horses/patients from trailer
- Interact with clients at drop‑off/pick‑up
- Take patients outside when needed, jog horses for lameness exams
- Assist holding and plating for x‑rays
- Hold and restrain horses in scintigraphy barn
- Clean stalls, hay and water horses routinely
- Help keep barn and surgery area clean
- Model professionalism and ethical practices
- Promote a cooperative working environment among staff members; demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to perform as necessary to help the practice function as a unit
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Promote continuous quality improvement
Perform other duties as assigned
- Demonstrated, advanced understanding of equine veterinary practices
- Ability to read horse body language and perform advanced handling of horses and foals
- Familiarity with Kentucky Thoroughbred industry
- Self‑motivated lifelong learner
- Works well independently and as part of a team
- Ability to drive a tractor
- Genuine liking for animals and for working in an animal‑care environment
- Work under the broad general administrative supervision of the owners and doctors, using sound personal judgment in selecting methods, establishing priorities, and arriving at conclusions
- May be required to work unusual hours, overtime, and be subject to recall in emergency situations
- Be flexible in attitude and work habits
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds
