Assistant Professor, Mechatronics & Robotics

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position from early-career academic researchers conducting high-impact research in any area of mechatronics, robotics, or intelligent mechanical systems. Areas of strong interest include advanced mechatronic design, sensing and actuation, and AI-enabled mechanical systems, autonomous and field robotics, intelligent control, human–robot interaction, soft and bio-inspired robotics, embedded and cyber-physical systems.

The successful applicant is expected to combine core expertise in mechatronics, robotics, embedded systems, dynamics, control and automation with a demonstrated potential to form a research program that incorporates recent advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and multidisciplinary design optimization for the synthesis of next-generation mechatronics and robotic systems. Interdisciplinary applicants and those collaborating across engineering, computer science, health, and environmental domains are especially encouraged.

The applicant will be required to have:

• hold (or be on the verge of completing) a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant discipline, with a specialization in Mechatronics & Robotics.
• be a registered professional engineer in Canada, or be eligible to apply for registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (details available at );
• evidence of research excellence, as demonstrated through publications, awards, or impactful contributions
• demonstrated particular analytical and/or experimental research creativity in the design, characterization, modelling, experimentation and/or systems integration of robotic technologies.
• the potential to achieve international recognition in their field through the dissemination of research in both traditional (academic literature) and non-traditional venues;
• demonstrated abilities to collaborate across disciplines, and to develop academic, government, and industry partnerships
• have clear ideas and aspirations to contribute to the Mechanical Engineering Department's drive to increase the diversity of our student population and foster a supportive and inclusive environment for all; and
• demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate engineering education as evidenced by:
  • potential for excellence in teaching courses related to the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering disciplines, and
  • an inclusive approach to mentoring and supervising diverse students, both in the classroom and in research environments.

Postdoctoral experience, industrial collaboration, and interdisciplinary impact are assets. The successful candidate will be appointed to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor.
