Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) - Sergeant Position

The Victoria Police Department is seeking Sergeant applications for the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU). CRU is designed to support the City of Victoria's Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan and assist the Patrol Division in efforts by proactively addressing street-level crime and disorder issues. The units mandate focuses on identifying, disrupting, and reducing low to mid-level property crime, drug trafficking, and chronic offender activity that negatively impacts community safety.

Through intelligence-led policing, targeted enforcement, and collaborative partnerships, CRU members will work to reduce crime, support Patrol operations, and improve public confidence throughout the City of Victoria.

Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan

Job Description:
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and operational direction to a team of seven plain clothes members engaged in proactive enforcement, intelligence-led policing, and offender management initiatives
  • Manage and coordinate operational staffing and deployment schedules, including a rotating 11.43 hour dayshift/afternoon pattern that encompass weekday and weekend deployments (same as GIS schedule):

Mon-Thu  (4 days)

5 days off

Wed-Sun  (5 days)

4 days off

Fri-Tue  (5 days)

5 days off

Repeat (starting with afternoons)

  • Hours of work will vary in order to respond to crime trends. (Schedule changes will be made with reasonable notice when possible)
  • Oversee enforcement strategies that support Patrol Division objectives by addressing street-level crime trends, chronic offender activity, and emerging community safety concerns through targeted and intelligence-informed responses
  • Lead and oversee intelligence-led enforcement initiatives targeting drug trafficking, property crime, prolific offenders, and emerging crime trends by directing operational planning, prioritizing resources, and coordinating strategies to identify, disrupt, and reduce criminal activity
  • Supervise surveillance operations, targeted enforcement projects, offender management strategies, and criminal investigations, ensuring compliance with legislation, policy, and best practices
  • Develop, maintain, and strengthen relationships with community stakeholders, businesses, service providers, and partner agencies to support crime reduction objectives and community safety priorities
  • Provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, performance management, and professional development opportunities for team members, promoting accountability, operational excellence, employee wellness, and a high-performing team environment
  • Monitor team performance, evaluate operational effectiveness, prepare reports, and provide recommendations to senior leadership regarding resource requirements, emerging risks, enforcement priorities, and strategic initiatives
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated strong supervisory and mentoring skills
  • Previous experience in Plain Clothes Operations and Surveillance Operations
  • Demonstrated experience supervising Drug and Property Crime investigations
  • Demonstrated experience in oversight and execution of a variety of Judicial Authorizations
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions in a high stress work environment
  • Demonstrated experience supervising a medium sized working group, file review and assignment of follow-ups
  • D demonstrated ability to identify priority criminal targets and to develop plans of action to address these targets
  • Demonstrated ability to provide written and verbal feedback to subordinate members as well as ability to complete annual Performance Appraisals
Eligibility:
  • Open to all members at the rank of Sergeant.

This posting is to fill one (1) vacancy. Anticipated start date is October 1, 2026.

Special Notes:

The successful Sergeant should be prepared to participate in Constable interviews and selection, scheduled for September 23 and 24, 2026.

The Unit will have a phased approach with three (3) Constables starting in October and four (4) Constables starting in December 2026.
